Why do messy/poorly-written commit messages bug me so much (and messy, un-squashed commit histories)?

With a few exceptions, on every team I've been on most developers just don't seem to care. I don't get it.

It's such a lack of respect for your teammates, other parts of the org, and even your future self. And it really doesn't take much effort.

I am going to stick to a rule in here that I wish I had done in old social media - that is that I will never give anyone the feeling that they are being told off or talked down to and I will unfollow or block anyone that I suspect of doing the same to me.
