"To get a better picture of these #forest relationships, a team of researchers used DNA analysis to map a #fungal network in a patch of #Canadianforest. Remarkably, they found that one #tree was connected to 47 other #trees. Their models also showed that when hub trees were removed, it would cause more connections to be lost than if trees were simply removed randomly."

It's such a seductive idea that trees talk to each other across their shared mycorrhizal network, and share resources with their seedlings. I'm not surprised that it's a hard thing to test properly in forests.

It sounds like there's still a long way to go before we know for sure if this is really happening, and, if it is, how widespread it and nuanced it is.
