Encountered some during our walk at yesterday, and explained to our 7yo about the network. Looking for a textbook on the subject, I came across the name Paul Stamets, which, having watched , struck me as just too much of a coincidence. Seems the contemporary expert influenced the whole plotline, and the Lt Cmdr was named after him in tribute! Hence the book I saw in today referencing both!

Remember this photo, that I've sent around a few times? Ghost Pipes (the flowers) of a a plant, not a fungus, that is parasitic on mycorrhizal fungi? (This plant does no photosynthesis. It steals all its food, making it a true parasite.)

Here is a link to pt 1 of a 3 part podcast talking about the symbiotic relationship that mycorrhizal fungi have with trees. There are quite a few details here I didn't know.

More evidence of the importance of mycelium as a global carbon pool: doi.org/10.1016/j.cub.2023.02.

And of the urgency in transitioning from high input, high tillage monocropping toward more diversified no/low-till systems incorporating perennial crops

One exciting thing about this project is its multi-faceted focus on community

Below ground, we're looking at the and effectiveness of adding either commercially available fungi or on-farm cultivated "Indigenous Micro-Organisms" (IMOs) to tree potting mixes and transplant field sites

Above ground, looking at the impact those organisms have on plant health and productivity, as well as the farmer knowledge networks needed to grow & sustain based livelihoods

Ok... this is a long read. It is very meandering but it is starting to encompass many of the things that I walk with when i am walking on the land. It's taken me a few days to tease it out, writing in breaks and pauses. I am trying to build language around something deeply sensory and explain it all at once. I think I will take it down even further, but at least this part is out.

"For the sake of this thought exercise I am going ask you to pretend you are in a perfectly dark room. I donโ€™t mean a nighttime room with starlight, or streetlight coming in. I mean a dark room. Like the kind we used for photography. Or the darkest sealed room in a house โ€“ basement with no windows, nothing. There is no light source. But for some reason you know there is another human in the space."

In an Oregon white (Quercus garryana) , more than 40 spp form associations with oaks. Many of the fungi are truffles, fruiting belowground. California voles, deer mice, and harvest mice eat the truffles and disperse spores, potentially playing a role in the reproduction and spread of oak woodlands by inoculating unoccupied soil.

Mycorrhizal Colonization: It's What Your Soil Needs but Probably Isn't Getting

"The vast majority of our soils are deficient in one thing. Not nitrogen, not phosphorus, not calcium, not another element...As a matter of fact, the deficiency is not an element (mineral) at all. It is not organic matter or carbon. It is actually a microorganism: fungi."

Flashback for to a single day walk through the incredible K'gari in Great Sandy National Park. Spent HOURS admiring and photographing endless species of fungi. K'gari has , woodland, forests, wallum and peat , and coastal . It is made up of sand that has been accumulating for approximately 750,000 years on volcanic bedrock that provides a natural catchment for the sediment carried on a strong offshore current northwards along the coast. Unlike on many sand dunes, plant life is abundant due to the naturally occurring present in the sand, which release nutrients in a form that can be absorbed by the plants.
