Interesting YouTube channel by a hobbyist who raises ants. I used to make Mason jar ant farms as a kid in Texas, until the fire ants arrived. Red ants were ideal for this. They will sting the piss out of you if you're not paying attention, but if you stay out of their trails it's unlikely. Fire ants were way too aggressive to collect. Bringing them inside on purpose was out of the question.

For my favorite shot from last year, a of a Rhytidoponera ant in Australia. Perhaps these amazing colours help predators remember their painful sting.

At first glance this looks like some sort of mymecological satanic ritual, but on closer inspection it appears to be a group of golden-tailed spiny ants (Polyrhachis ammon) attacking an interloper.

Ku Ring Gai Chase National Park on Sydney’s northern fringes.

Bullant, I think in Wianamatta Reserve, out to Sydney’s west.

Years ago we found an intriguing Lasius emarginatus mtDNA lineage in Sicily... Now we know what it really was. Check out our new paper! We show that the recently described Lasius maltaeus is also present in Sicily and we discuss the biogeography of this species. tinyurl.com/33ja3tkf

To experimentally assess the long-term selective effect of social immunity on co-infecting pathogens, we performed a serial passage experiment.

We subjected the ants to two different selection treatments, one excluding social immunity by keeping exposed ants individually, and the other with social immunity provided by two caregiving nestmates.

A good chunk of my undergrad I was a biology major and I still thoroughly enjoy biology. Since I was little I’ve loved to observe ants, they are such amazing little beings that are so underappreciated. A great intro to how amazing ants are would be any of Dr. Edward O. Wilson’s books on ants.

One of my other hobbies... Keeping ants. Not a super common one, but it's interesting none the less. (I am very aware the test tubes are empty, but they have an additional water source and haven't been in a mood to let me take them...)

I enjoy designing setups for them, often 3D printed (sometimes 3D printing and cast into other material)

Also note they *love* dandelion seeds but dislike coconut

Yesterday was the last course on the project delivered in London. A bittersweet moment. Speechless to have been gifted this original artwork of a Yellow Meadow (Lasius flavus) by the very talented . Many thanks to a newly trained & very enthusiastic entomologist. 😍

It seems to me that an important part of the is the ability to de-federate.

As someone involved in attempts to build networks, I find this feature attractive. I support the creation of small instances, where most users would have some kind of real world connection and can carry on their business without having to participate in the aspects of the internet.

@bugblokenz I’m rather partial to these glossy Black Jet Ants (Lasius fuliginosus) carrying springtail prey back to their nest.
