3D Starstrike (Realtime Software, 1984). 'Unofficial' version of Atari's Star Wars arcade game, in my opinion much better than the original. Exciting 3D fights in your mission to reach and destroy the reactor in the core of the moon through three stages. Thrilling game with four levels of difficulty that becomes addictive

Zorro (US Gold, 1986). In this game you become the californian hero to rescue a maiden from evil Colonel Garcia. The game consists of solving ingenous puzzles to get objects in order to get other objects and so on to finally complete your mission. 18 screens of improvable graphics, but not a bad adventure

3D Monster Chase (Romik Software, 1984). An original first-person 3D maze game in which your task is to search a missing key through the 3 floors, back to the starting point and defuse an activated bomb, then search for the next key (7 in total) and so on, while terrible monsters prowl through the maze. The game achieves a good horror atmosphere, all in just 16K.

River Rescue (Thorn EMI Video Ltd., 1984). You control a patrol boat in the jungle and must rescue explorers located at the bank of a river. Frenetic action at a high speed along the river avoiding cocrodiles, rocks, trunks and other obstacles. Great fun with a simple concept

Pinball (Sagittarian Software, 1983). The excitement of playing the always cool pinball at home. Bumpers, bonus targets, ... the movement and physics of the ball is very well done from the moment you launch it. Original double set of flippers. Only the poor sounds are the bad point, but hey, it's just 16K of memory!

Pud Pud (Ocean, 1984). The game that let legendary coder Joffa Smith earn 1,000£ in cash and a job in the company. A sort of flying pac-man must escape from Weird World by eating 10 hidden puddings to find the secret exit. Eat certain creatures to get energy, and avoid others, like Mrs Pud Pud and her deadly kiss.
A surreal world made of 225 screens of plattforms, senseless graphics and strange messages

Eric and the Floaters (Sinclair Research, 1984). Maze game by the japanese Hudson Soft. Destroy all the floaters in the screen by dropping a bomb that explode 2-3 seconds later. Bombs can also destroy walls. So it's a question of strategy and, of course, luck. The number of floaters increase as you advance. An original and funny arcade.

Froggy (DJL, 1983). As in Z-Man, David J. Looker made the best conversion of the classic arcade for the Spectrum. A lovely intro tune for a start, and then the challenge of taking our frog to a safe place by crossing a crowded highway and a river infested of cocrodiles and other animals. Pure addictiveness

Impossaball (Hewson, 1987). Very original game by newcomer John M. Phillips, who wrote an addictive program about a bouncing ball in a 3D environment. The ball must squash all the cylinders and avoiding the spikes, plasma fields and fire bolts on the way through eight levels. A nice tune and sounds complete a very interesting game

Penetrator (Melbourne House, 1982). A superb Scramble clone by Philip Mitchell and Veronika Megler with all the ingredients of a classic arcade: cool sounds and tune, smooth movement and acceptable graphics. Five exciting and addictive levels with a frenetic action (only five???) and a game editor. Definitely a classic from the early years

Technician Ted (Hewson, 1985). Hewson's response to successful Software Projects' Jet Set Willy. A young hacker who works at the local microprocessor factory must complete his 21 daily tasks in a certain time, each one by hitting two flashing boxes in certain order. 55 screens of insane difficulty seasoned with a tiresome Blue Danube tune. Anyway, it leaves a good impression

Z-Man (DJL Software, 1983). The umpteenth unofficial conversion of Namco's classic arcade made in the early years is also the most faithful. Originally coded for the ZX81, it was then released for the Spectrum 16K and it features very successful graphics and sounds that let you enjoy the very Pac-Man at home. After a legal dispute with Atari, the game was modified and re-released as its official conversion

Reversi (Sinclair Research, 1982). The computer version of a board game doesn't need to feature sophisticated graphics or catchy tunes to be funny, just simple and easy to play. And that's this version of the late nineteenth century game Othello. Addictive and exciting as the original: when you think you're about to win, a move can reverse your fortune and makes you almost lose the game.

Kokotoni Wilf (Elite Systems, 1984). A enjoyable adventure of Kokotoni, a flying angel, who must collect all the pieces of a dragon amulet scattered throughout time. With the usual Elite's mediocre graphics, the game features a time travel through several years in the past, the present (1984) and a far 2001. Original flying movement of the character, that must avoid moving objects and enemies. A cool game with an always interesting topic

Camelot Warriors (Dinamic, 1986). An arthurian adventure in which you must cross four worlds: the forest, the lake, the caves and finally the castle of Camelot. In each one, find an object from the future and give it to its guardian, to cross to next world.A difficult game with terrible obstacles in the best Dinamic style. Clumsy movement of the character that complicate the progress but lovely graphics with a cool medieval touch

Who Dares Wins II (Alligata, 1986). Armed with an automatic rifle and 5 grenades, you must advance through 8 fields of battle infested of enemies. A surprisingly addictive Commando clone with mediocre graphics but a high playability. Unlike this kind of games, there's no vertical scroll but screen to screen advance. If you love Commando, you'll love this game

Chequered Flag (Sinclair Research, 1983). A brilliant F1 simulator back in the day, but that hasn't aged very well. In that year, a racing car game that featured first person view, 10 famous circuits to choose from as well as 3 cars, number of laps, hills to climb and descend, a pit stop, ... was just amazing to play. Control the fuel level and avoid the overheating in the engine, oil or water on the road, ... a Spectrum classic

Trivial Pursuit (Domark, 1986). Good conversion of the popular board game to the Spectrum, with the advsntages of adding sounds or graphics to the questions. TP is the character that has the role of making you the questions in a certain time. Then, he'll show the answer and ask you whether you were right or not. Includes packs of questions to be loaded. As enjoyable as the original board game

Astro Blaster (Quicksilva, 1983). This game by John Edwards was one of the first space shooters for the Spectrum. As its instructions saysm "a test to your reflex and ability", avoiding several hordes of space birds and meteor storns. A very decent shooter ideal for a quick gaming
