Spartans Were Losers
The U.S. military’s admiration of a proto-fascist city-state is based on bad history.

You may have heard the tale of the NASA space pen.

It’s a myth.

The Fisher pen was developed by Paul Fisher, not NASA.

Russians used wax pencils before switching to similar pen.

Also of note: the graphite of typical pencils in zero gravity could cause an electrical short hazard & the wood/plastic would be a fire hazard.

It’s that time of year, again, to debunk a common and widespread myth about Barton Springs Pool in Austin: The myth is that the temperature of the pool “remains a constant 68 degrees” (or 70 degrees, depending on your source). In fact, the temperature of the pool has never been constant but can range from 68°F to 75°F, depending on the season and the exact location where the temperature is measured.

Homeless people participating in the study said that as little as $300/month would have kept them off the street. 90% became homeless in California.

' The study’s authors say the findings highlight the idea that money, more than addiction, mental health, poor decisions or other factors, is the main cause of – and potential solution to – homelessness. '

Dr Jac den Houting stays cool and consistently handles all the complex questions in this discussion on RNZ today.

While hard to follow at times due to poor audio it was good chat, deconstructing some of the the most prevalent myths around autism today.

Kim Hill addresses all the most common misunderstandings as questions. So they all get covered. Nice job.

1. Dark mode only saves power if true black (#000) is used on OLED or MicroLED screens. Gray must still be illuminated.

2. Dark mode worsens accessibility for most people. ~40% of people have astigmatism. Dark mode causes a visual effect called “halation” which reduces legibility.

3. There is no reason to lessen “blue light”. You get more from the sun than screens. It is not harmful. Yellowing the screen does little. Only eliminating screens 2 hours before bed helps with sleep.
