OBIT Dr Frederick Phillips Brooks Jr, leader of IBM's OS/360 project and the man chiefly responsible for the prevalence of the eight-bit byte, has died at the age of 91.

Fred Brooks was the project lead for OS/360, IBM's flagship OS for its vastly influential S/360 line of computers. His experience on this project led him to write probably the most famous book about project management, The Mythical Man-Month. From that book came several famous dictums about computing. Some notable examples include:

- "Adding manpower to a late software project makes it later."
- "The bearing of a child takes nine months, no matter how many women are assigned."
- "All programmers are optimists."

RIP Fred 'Mythical Man-Month' Brooks: IBM guru of software project management

You mean you can't make 9 women have a baby in a month?

In honor of Fred Brooks, read Mythical Man Month by starting up a book club and assigning different people different chapters, then continuing to increase efficiency by splitting up each group of chapters along more people until the whole thing is done.

Rest in peace, Fred Brooks. Thanks for all the insight, and for changing the byte from 6 bits to 8.

It may be a coincidence of timing, but Fred Brooks's death just now makes me think about micro-blogging sites:

Rest in peace Fred Brooks.

His book, "Mythical Man Month", is a huge influence on my career and has influenced the entire industry, along with his paper ""No Silver Bullet—Essence and Accident in Software Engineering". Both of which are widely read, and many of us wish understood deeper.

RIP Fred Brooks, architect of the IBM/360 and its OS, and author of The Mythical Man Month. A hugely influential computer scientist. As an undergraduate computer science student I worked part time in the Physics/Maths library at St Andrews University. And for much of my time there in between helping users I’d pull The Mythical Man Month off the shelf of short loan books behind me, and have another read.

As of today, I will work for free the rest of 2022.

I am supposed to work about 1640 hours a year, and after last week my overtime is +17h already.

I keep track of my working hours since 2013, and I have not been able to reduce my overtime out of fear of not being as "productive" as I should be. Guess what? I am far less productive that all indicators demand I should be. 🤷
