@smashtie I’m really glad you enjoy it. I love that podcast

Another one with a wonderful storyteller is with .

I recently listened to episode 315- Korean Folklore: Mountain Magic. I think it’s a great story and is less than a 45 minute investment

I hope you like that one too 👋🏼😃

I've been a bit absent from here lately, because I've been working on this. Any folk, please do check it out. Or if you're thinking of coming this way for a holiday or trip (which I highly encourage, it's a magical part of the world), do come my way!

In the legend of Childe Rowland, the titular hero embarks on a quest to save his sister, Burd Ellen, who was stolen and imprisoned by the king of Elfland after she ran widdershins (anti-clockwise) around a church while playing.

Unlike his two older brothers, who failed on the same mission and were themselves imprisoned, Rowland follows the advice of the wizard Merlin to the letter, and is able to save his siblings.

The origin of this tale is a bit of a mystery (see next toot), but some versions suggest that it's a Border story, with links to places in and .

Meet a few of the shape-shifting felines in African legends!

The wereleopard is really a leopard deity who presents as a human during the day, while the werelion may have been a royal ruler in its past life.

In Tanzania, the Nunda or Mngwa is also a werecat. This enormous creature, said to be more ferocious than a lion, stalks villages at night.

“Doctor Bud a Cunny Bud,
Hard Bud Fi Dead”

This Jamaican folk song is about our National bird, a swallow-tailed hummingbird known as the Doctor Bird.

The Taíno call the hummingbird the "God bird" because they believe this peaceful creature is the reincarnation of dead souls, as well as a guardian messenger between the worlds of the living and the dead.

Trying to think of some Northumbrian folklore snippets that would fit the theme of nonviolence leads me to muse on the relationship between our Border legends and violence.

This was an area where violence was a normal part of life (more so than in many other places) for centuries, and it's reflected in our folklore. While we find some heroes (or anti-heroes) who win the day by trickery, one notable feature of several tales is that the hero is offered a direct choice between a violent and nonviolent route. They are often depicted as taking the nonviolent path, but this is the "wrong" way - the coward's way - and leads to their failure or downfall!

A reflection of values, maybe of a time and place when local position was won by violence, feuds were settled by the sword, and the laws of the land (Border or "March" law differed from general English or Scottish law) allowed for a tit-for-tat retaliation system.

Maybe the opposite of the theme here, but historical context will always be fascinating to me!

Pictured: The medieval border fortress of Etal Castle, in the 15th Century the site of a pitched battle between Lord Manners of Etal and Lord Heron of Ford (a couple of miles up the road) and their respective men, in which Heron was killed - the result of a petty feud between neighbours.

And the online ticket shop is also up and running! Tickets are available for my open-air storytelling sessions from April to June, with dates for later in the summer to come.

If you're going to be around Northumberland or the Scottish Borders this summer and enjoy folktales and legends, stories in the open air, or want to try something new and different, I'd love to see you here! The experience has been described in reviews as "magical", "entrancing" and "wondrous" - and it's very affordable too, with adult tickets at £6 (concessions and family tickets available).

There will also be one or two special evening events on certain nights of the year, with tickets for the Beltane Fireside night already on sale.

Continuing to organise photos from last year. This is a somewhat unusual view from the Storr, a little above the beaten path. Looks to me like the spine of some ancient mythical creature diving under the landscape 🙂

I've been doing a series of myths and legends for a bit. It's something I leave and come back to from time to time. My first post had one of them in it (the skeleton figure with the eyeballs). This one is Saturn, an expelled deity, who took refuge in Italy and taught the locals how to grow vines and produce wine.

Listening to a Myths & Legends episode recounting The Golden Ass (a 2000 year old novel) and it contains more instances of defecation onto people, bawdiness and sex than I am generally used to in tales left from that era.

The tale is almost as strange as the attack of the giant pumpkin from earlier in the year but is definitely dirtier (and this one was sanitised.)
