I played with a couple of the Hauppauge tuner cards with #MythTV before #TiVo. Used a TabloTV for a while after TiVo, before giving up on broadcast TV (cable or OTA) entirely.

Just got #kodi setup with #tvheadend - so much more polished than #mythtv PITA to build on #slackware though, the slackbuilds.org slackbuild doesn't compile the plugins.

My #ps3 died after a firmware update and my tv is too old to play some channels in australia. Probably time to get a new tv anyway.

Sigh, life is dull.

@soc_i_ety @Free_Press Broadcast TV has improved quite a bit lately along with broadcast radio. I suspect the need to compete w/online options has forced them to cut back on commercial ads. So I run #mythTV (a #FOSS DVR) which records broadcast TV. Commercials tend to only run after a show ends w/out interrupting the program. And if they decide to inject mid-program commercials, mythTV can detect & remove

Anyone out there use #MythTV to record streams from a cable set top box? What capture card are you using?

Yay, finally figured out a way to archive #MythTV recordings, maintaining the 888 CC subtitle stream.

I did discover aged tools before, but that no longer worked. I thought it'd be tricky.

But, I was clearly overthinking it.

Last night cooked together a bunch of scripts that use #CCextractor and #FFmpeg to get an SRT file and a more agressively re-encoded and de-interlaced MP4 stream that I then combine into a single MKV file.

4.7GB in, 970MB out, all without any noticable quality loss. 🥳

Today my #MythTV database turned 18 years old 😲

It's now old enough to vote for what we record and watch!

Long live linear TV and timestretch! 📺

I may also replace my #MythTV and some other services with #Jellyfin, but I don't see anything that says Jellyfin's #SyncPlay will do what I'm after (especially with the fairly precise synchronization).

@deutrino @jpmens @annika #Kodi is #Cloudflare-compromized, so it wouldn’t exactly be in the spirit of jpmens’ stance. OTOH #MythTV is well within bounds of the free world (though I admit it’s not the same thing as Kodi).

I created new account, and seems people do #introduction. So here we go. I love geeking with small computing, like #homeautomation. A bit letting go of #mythtv and #kodi. Mostly #homeassistant and #openhab and #opnsense. For work mainly #OpenShift, #ansible, #rhel and all hybrid cloud automations around them. Family guy. Open source is my thing.

@mawr It also seems FM broadcast radio is not as cluttered with ads as it used to be since now there are more streams it must compete with. I wish the user side tech would evolve more. I would love to have a #MythTV-like for radio.. to see a schedule and choose programs to record, fed by a multi-tuner box with ethernet.

Any #mythTV users out there? I'm running myth on Fedora, and after being idle, the front end goes blank with no way to recover. (Have to alt-tab and kill it so not a screensaver).
No rhyme or reason, happens whenever it feels like it, sometimes 5h, sometimes 5 days.
Process is still running, but it's just a black screen.
