I've been playing around with #nix the past few weeks on a virtual machine - I'm pretty much a #n00b but I'm pretty blown away by the possibilities. The combination of configuration.nix, #homemanager settings, and #dconf2nix (for Gnome settings), along with #GnomeExtensions installed via configuration - things look exciting!

Thinking I will save and upload config in a week or so, then install on my secondary laptop.

How should I explore the possibility of using an #algorithm on my feed? I would love to have a list of "the most recent post by each individual account I follow" in addition to the reverse-chronological feed, because some people post lots (which is great) but I am interested in what *everyone* I'm following has to say.

Is this a thing we can do on the fediverse? If so, what do I search for? If not, should I just make a suggestion on GitHub?

Still in a #n00b in the fediverse. Realized today that I have not one, but two mastodon accounts - with the same name: one on mastodon.social and one on fosstodon.org. I also didn't realize earlier that I was signed in to both on #tusky and that I was posting my #distrohopping journey on mastodon (fosstodon seems more appropriate). Posting a link here - will use fosstodon for #oss stuff going forward:

I spent a half an hour this afternoon riding the motorcycle around an empty parking lot down the street from my house. If I'm going to drop the bike or something, I would prefer to be in the parking lot of an abandoned industrial park.

More progress on my little #Mastodon hashtag tracking project in #JavaScript.

Cutting through all the data of each status being streamed in real time start parsing out hashtags and store them to a file. That's just for now; will need to implement a simple database later. #Learning #n00b

#TIL about the stream which is far better than my old way of getting public timeline statuses essentially in a loop of repeated calls. Outputting statuses to a web page but that’s not the end goal.

So, if you're going to run a Mastodon server on Amazon AWS, budget for a medium server or larger. I ran into memory limitations with both Mastodon and Elastic Search running at the same time on a t3.small instance.
