Using Google Earth imagery, archaeologists have discovered three Roman army camps in the Arabian desert. The camps have a classic playing-card shape and are located across northern Arabia, from Jordan to Saudi Arabia. The camps could be evidence of an unknown ancient campaign linked to the Roman takeover of the Nabatean kingdom in 106 AD.

The Nabateans originally were very austere pastoral Arabs who prohibited icons and alcohol

Later on they struck it rich through trade and were Hellenized so their attitude towards icons and alcohol changed

How did the fall of the Nabateans inform Islamic austerity?
The Nabateans had a good reason to prohibit alcohol and their fall proved their initial argument. “People who love alcohol are easily conquered and ruled.”

An Ancient Sundial from the City of Hegra in Northern Arabia (1st Century AD). The Nabataean Inscription Translated: 𝑴𝒆𝒏𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒏 𝒐𝒇 𝑵𝒂𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏. Evidently, the owner of this Sundial was an Arabian Jew.
