This takes me back to the ill-fated Trans-Pacific Partnership (#TPP)

We had a golden opportunity to form an affirmative alliance that stood for #HumanRights, #Democracy, and #FreeMarkets. The American electorate killed the effort because #neoliberalism had failed to deliver the gains from #NAFTA broadly enough.

The #neoliberal project failed to account for (1) adaptation costs for economically displaced individuals, (2) labor & environmental standards, and (3) #resilience

#MargaretThatcher said of #NAFTA the only thing wrong with it was the "A" was "American" not "Atlantic". #English pundits at the launching of the "#EuroMess" spoke of cultivating the #Anglosphere & lamented that US #immigration undermined the "#SpecialRelationship". I suspect there was this same spirit of #Empire at play in #BREXIT, an expectation that former #colonies would fill the void left by their abandoned neighbors. When 🇬🇧 bickers with Europe, 🇺🇲 has a history of stepping in.

Having most everything made in China, shipped to the US and sold for next to nothing never made sense.

With re-shoring, we’re slashing the distance between where it’s made and where it’s sold.

It seems like we’re shipping products all over the world for no reason. Except profits for billionaires.

It’s time to come clean: I used to be a neoliberal, free trade booster. “Made in the USA” seemed naive, even silly. Sigh.

But now I know better. President Biden’s assertion of “made in the USA” in #sotu was both great politics and great policy. “Re-shoring” will help undo sh*t deals, such as #nafta. (NAFTA hit Detroit Black people especially hard.)
