People seem to be settling on calling Elon Musk's social media dumpster fire "Xitter". I study classical Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs, and in the Spanish transliteration of that language, "x" is provided "sh" (so e.g. "xochitl" is approximately "SHOH-cheet"). It seems to me that this pronunciation is quite appropriate for use in "Xitter". Tezcatlipoca would approve. 🙃

For context, here is the section on the comparing verse and ones.

Maybe my personal confusion comes from the difference in and the translator's own interpretation.

I would need to find my dictionary and try translating it myself some time as practice.

As a side note, ometeotl and omeyocan are something from leon portilla, and are interpretations questioned by newer sources but still show up from time to time. (2/2)

While the didn't have specific words for trans people, they did have words for people who transgressed gender norms.

Xochihuah: "flower-bearer", for both sexes.

Patlache: the precise meaning is uncertain, but encompasses a complex of intersexuality, trans masculinity, and female queerness.

Cuiloni: from cui, "to take". Likely referred to passive/receptive male partners in homosexual encounters.

Nowadays, these words have been reclaimed!

The conversations here around the risks of storing information and community knowledge on for-profit social media platforms that were never designed to be such had me thinking about what more I can do to safeguard the knowledge my tiny online community has put together.

So I made a wiki: amoxtli.teochan.org/

The following chart presents a comparison of some common vocabulary between Classical (the lingua franca of the Mexica – “Aztec” - Empire, before the arrival of the Europeans) and Pipil of the town of Santo Domingo de Guzmán, .

The tiny teporingo (Romerolagus diazi) or volcano rabbit is endemic to the slopes of four volcanoes in Central . It normally lives above 2,800 mts., close to the fields of a sort of volcano grass called “zacatón”. In they are also called “zacatuche”, a word derived from (“Aztec” language) “zacatochtli”, meaning “grass rabbit”. Unfortunately the teporingo is an endangered species due to overgrazing and fragmentation of its habitat.

Greetings in
Due to the high cultural diversity in the people, the meaning of "hello" may vary. Pialli is a very common used word to greet, also Panoltzin which is literally translated as 'I pass near you' and a more respectuos way of greet is changed to Panoltzintinoh. Finally, there are numerous ways to greet, in some regions Panolti chicawatica is a common and formal greet. Ken Timopilia is translated as 'how do you feel yourself?' and is also used.

Tepoztotocalli is translated as Airport and combines three words: tepostl: iron or technological equipment; tototl: bird; calli: home; and is literally translated such as "home of the iron birds" and is commonly used to refer to airports.

micro-lesson 4.

With the plural endings -h & -tin, there can ALSO be "reduplication," a repetition of the first consonant & vowel of the word.

-teotl (god, divine energy, supernatural) teteoh (gods)

-coatl (snake) cocoah

-coyotl (coyote) cocoyoh

-tochtli (rabbit) totochtin

-pilli (child, noble) pipiltin

Note: the "h" represents a glottal stop (hitch in the throat, like at the end of the 1st syllable of "uh-oh").

Putting together a resource for teochan.org this morning, and discovering that there are a few common translations of cempoalhuitl ("month") names that make NO sense!

, for instance, is constantly said to mean "stretching", or on the other hand, "shrinking". But "titi-" actually means "belly". Another one is , which is commonly reported to mean "rebirth". There's no attestation for it; "iz" means "here" while "calli" is "house"!
