Reviewing the proposed data schema for the new system, and I see fields called givenName and familyName.
Not "first" and "last" name? Good! 😄
And while there's a validation pattern specified on other string fields, there's none on these. Will they accept any characters?
"Yes," I'm told, "any UTF-8 characters".
Damn, I thought I'd have to fight to get them to allow hyphens, spaces, and apostrophes! You mean Ворис Чехов and 花子中村 can have their names right? Yay! 😁😁😁

Purple loosestrife showing all its colours, in shadow and in the sunlight, where it looks pink. The botanist William Turner gave Lythrum Salicaria its English name Lousstrife in 1551, and later noted that it "may in englishe be called red loosestryfe or purple loosestryfe”. The poet John Clare called it Long Purples. Pink was not yet a colour name: the colour was just pale red. Pink as an adjective may have come from the flower so named, with its pinked petal margins.

Here's a silly idea I had today:
My name is Christina, and most people call me Chris. But one friend calls me Tina. So in some sense "Chris" and "Tina" are related, since they're both abbreviations for Christina.
How far can you get by repeatedly abbreviating and unabbreviating?
Well, thankfully there's a dataset of common english names with abbreviations, and I had 20 minutes to spare!
The longest path is "Jack" to "Theo", and it looks like this:
Jack
John
Jonathan
Nathan
Nathaniel
Natty
Natalie
Nettie
Jeanette
Jean
Genevieve
Eve
Evaline
Lena
Aileen
Allie
Alberta
Bert
Wilber
Will
Fred
Winnifred
Winny
Winfield
Win
Edwin
Ned
Edmund
Ted
Theodore
Theo
Needless to say, I'm going to call the next "Jack" I meet "Theo" and claim it's a common abbreviation, haha.

Thinking about giving your baby a unique name? Hold on one second. “After debating ‘Farah’ and ‘Franny,’ they finally saw my future first name as a stranger’s last name in a newspaper article, and voila,” Faran Krentcil describes how her parents came up with her name. Here’s the whole article in Romper.com.

According to one of the possible etymologies for the word ‘Spain’, it means ‘the island of hyraxes’. Another suggests that it simply rhymed with ‘rain’ and ‘plain’.

Well, only a few more weeks until I probably get myself suspended or fired for agitating within my district over recent #Indiana requirement that educators help the far right bully #LGBTQ kids.
I'm old. I can't afford to lose this job at this stage of my life. But I'm not writing an official letter to parents every time someone my list says is a "Christopher" asks to be called "Chris," and I'm sure as hell not writing a letter every time some kid tells me they're terrified their parents might find out they're gay and go by some other pronoun or name.

I guess I should write something reminding people of why #slaves weren't allowed to keep their preferred #names, or why #prisoners are often given numbers instead of keeping their chosen designations. It's all about power and humiliation. Maybe I can't fight the system, but that doesn't mean I have to join it.
*sigh*
I'm concerned.
