I did another 28km today! starting to feel not as sore when I am done! Body is getting used to it. Took the flatter/longer route. Much more enjoyable physically and still a really good workout. Being nearer traffic isn't as nice as being in the trees most of the way but it's a tradeoff. Pretty happy to have made the bike commute for a third day. Took a new route today along a new “Complete Street” that then connects to a paved trail beside railway tracks, that connects to some on-road bike lanes routes. 14km total. It was much flatter than the previous route and so it was a lot faster and easier even though it was 2km longer. The most enjoyable part is definitely the complete street. If we had been building streets like this for the past 50 years the world would be a very very different place!

Back in the day there were 7 large Pulp and/or Paper Mills on Vancouver Island. They were the major employer in Port Alice, Gold River, Powell River, Campbell River, North Cowichan/Crofton, Nanaimo (Harmac), and Port Alberni.

Gold River closed permanently 20 years ago.
Campbell River closed permanently 15 years ago.
Harmac was sold to the employees 15 years ago, it continues.
Port Alice closed permanently 10-15 years ago.
Powell River closed permanently this year.
Crofton has been 'curtailed' for last 3 months due to 'market conditions’ (see link). The outlook is not bright.
Port Alberni is the last “company mill” on the Island and has avoided most of the turmoil at least outwardly.

Other than Harmac, the last 3 mills were the final ones owned by one entity. That entity, Paper Excellence, is owned by a member of the Wijaya family who run a huge conglomerate in Indonesia: Sinar Mas.

It's just numbers on a spreadsheet now.

I expect Port Alberni's mill to be closed within 5 years.

There are lots of reasons for the shutdown, but I believe the major one is company consolidation and offshoring of global pulp and paper production.

For the August long weekend, we did something new. We went camping without a car. It was an experiment, an adventure, and a huge success. I highly recommend checking out Saysutshun (Newcastle Island). Beautiful spot and relatively easy to get to from Vancouver.

The ride back featured longer inclines so it was a little slower but I still made it in basically the same time as the morning ride when I took a wrong turn. My bum is a little sore and my legs will be sore tomorrow, but overall, not bad! The longest distance ride I've done for about 23 years!

And thanks to the EV for the first 68km it would also be the lowest CO2 commute I have had since I moved out of Nanaimo 20 years ago when I actually biked all the way to work.

If there was a "New School Year Resolution" this morning was it. A first time 14km bike ride from where I park the car and normally hop on the bus to work. Took 65min. (bus is 20-30min) Hoping to get that down to 45min. I took a 5min detour/wrong way this morning so that part will be easy to knock off. :) We’ll see what it's like on the way back. Vast majority was on a dedicated walk/bike trail, though I must say whoever designated it a bike trail and then put 50m long 20% grade hills in some parts was an evil evil person.
