, commonly known as , heavenly bamboo or sacred bamboo, is a species of flowering plant in the family Berberidaceae, native to eastern Asia from the Himalayas to Japan.

This one in I snapped on the weekend and it’s a happy and healthy looking beauty.

It displays bright-red fruit in the cool months. Although the berries are toxic to birds, especially towards the end of the winter when other food sources become scarce. The reason the fruit is untouched and in tact.

🙌♥️🙂

turning colour here in

is well underway and flora is starting to react accordingly, as blooms prepare to die off, leaves start to change colours and (some) fall.

Gorgeous.

have been turning colour for some months now. Depending on their locale throughout Melbs.

But with the introduction of -proper, many are turning a bright red. And red all over.

Not sure I’ve seen so many turn so swiftly - and so dark for some time.

My mum used to grow these (a staple in my childhood garden) and whilst I marvelled as a kid with their ever-evolving colour changes, these ones I’m observing of late are really spectacular.

🙏❤️

Is this one called a , folks?

It goes by other unofficial names by looks. If so, it’s native to both China and Japan.

These are (turning) deep red in many gardens in these early stages of autumn in Melbs.

These bushes were snapped in . So vibrant.

This is what remains of 163 that I have cut down in the past few weeks.

The bags contain only leaves, berries, and roots. The wood I will dispose of separately because it punches holes in the bags.

The barrels contain whole plants that need to be cut up, but I can't do it right now, because they're frozen shut.

This includes all the stuff that was blown away last night, but smaller because I chopped it up.

Disaster! A snow storm here, minor even for central , but the wind is very strong.

The barrels and leaf bags I've been using to store the 159 I've dug up? They've been blown all around the property, lids have popped off, and bags have torn open.

I am searching in the dark to find them, but root pieces and berries have been scattered everywhere.

Worse still, the bricks I use as weights against the wind are frozen together, and I can't get them.

I'm going to have to abandon my to eradicate the . Too much trespassing is required.

I will defend my borders without mercy, but they have a foothold and can never be stopped.

This, for example, is only *one* plant. It was over 5 feet tall before I cut it.

Continuing to work on my personal , I have once again gone hunting for the plant.

The problem is much worse than I thought. I stopped counting at 100 plants, some of them are decades old.

I also picked up some trash, and is always a plus, but now I'm tired.

(For context, this is in the southern United States. This plant is toxic to native wildlife. It fruits in winter when other food gets scarce, so it's dangerous to them.)

This wet year has brought out the best colours in Sydney. (Apologies to everyone who is dealing with floods and the worst of the big wet). I am preemptively worried about the inevitable next big dry.
