Wanted to share a recent project of mine from past few weeks to turn my #nanopi r5s #sbc into a really potent pure debian Linux router that was sane to manage.
I was able to successfully switch over this weekend and retire my edgerouter-6p.
The formula is basically #ansible #systemd stuff #netplan #dnsmasq #frrouting and #foomuuri -- the lynchpin solution for sanely doing robust zone-to-zone firewalls using #nftables

I got a #nanopi r5s and I'm just weirdly excited about it unlike most #SBC I have, because I truly believe I can make it a sane all-linux router/firewall
Thanks to other people's hard work there's bleeding edge mainline kernel and uboot support. I added a CSC for it to #armbian

What hardware are you using? The 'official' TAK server is pretty heavy, but some of the alternative server implementations are pretty lightweight.
(I wonder if it would run on a #NanoPi? Might have to test that out.)

For the curious, it's a #NanoPi "Duo 2", a not-too-terrible little SBC built around the #Allwinner H3 SoC (aka sun8iw7p1), which is itself built around the #ARM Cortex-A7 quad-core processor.
In keeping with the finest traditions of low-cost Chinese hardware, the manufacturer seemingly only produced 2 Linux builds for it, they're both ancient, and contain an alarming number of mysterious binary blobs and arguable GPL violations. 😬
However, #Armbian 6.1.30-sunxi runs just fine!

It's been a while since I've posted progress pics for the NanoPi.cloud cluster build, so here's a few recent ones. In more normal times this cluster would have been finished in Q1, but balancing work with ongoing medical treatment has mostly consumed my free time and cognitive space.
The build is made up of 4x R5S (+2TB NVMe for Ceph), 4x R6S for compute, 3x R86S for the K3s mgmt nodes. Stay tuned for a blog and wiki that covers more details.

I get a surprising amount of, "so... how are _you_ doing?" lately. I'm not sure if it's a positive or deep concern being voiced, but I guess it's nice to be asked. Anyway!
Some recent #homelab stuff, recabled the 12U rack under my desk, reimaged the #NanoPi nodes with #DietPi.
The NanoPi R6S is a single-board PC with an RK3588S processor and three Ethernet ports (2 x 2.5 GbE and 1 x Gigabit). #saturday nerdery: a few MODBUS TCP gateways for the #NanoPi cluster, and a super messy desk in back of my monitors. Removed most of the stuff back there, then reorganized + cleaned up.
Should be finished tomorrow after cable managing a VESA mounted #NUC 11 with RTX-2060M, running #FreeBSD.

Non-eMMC storage: SanDisk Extreme in 256GB for each node, and an IR thermometer to take point readings once the #cluster is mounted.
Then, a GlobalSAT #GPS for local PPS time server to run without #NTP or chrony sync lags on the network, as well as air-gapped testing. I've had to install RTCs to all nodes, completed today, to facilitate the expectation of consistent time across reboots.

After being patient for several weeks to deliver, the four replacement #NanoPi R6S units have arrived.
So, that brings the count to 4x R5S (NVMe storage nodes) + 4x R6S (as compute nodes) + 3x R4SE (as control plane nodes).
In Q1 the control plane will be upgraded (mid-January) to 3x R86S-G3 (N6005, 16GB, 3x 2.5G + 2x 10G for ingress).
Finally, the parts are all here to build the cluster. The R6S units will be opened to install an RTC (hey NanoPi, just include the RTC on the board).
