I never did an intro post so here it is:
I'm a male Irish tech worker. Politically I'd be a left-leaning centrist. I'm non-religious & dislike of performative piety. I have little time for extremists of whichever stripe.
My interests are: history, aviation, chess, photography & some cooking. In short, I have too many. 🙂
Mastodon seems much more chilled than Twitter, less R-Ws in the timeline...

“Farewell, my children! I would like to press you all on my heart; let me at least kiss your flag!" - Napoléon then proceeds to hug general Petit and to kiss the flag and then says "Farewell once again, my old companions! May this last kiss pass through your hearts!”
In May 1814, France was once again a Bourbon monarchy. All was back as it was and European order would not be disturbed again for a very long time..... I'm just kidding. #OTD in 1810, Napoléon marries Marie-Louise of Austria in the Saint-Cloud castle (there’d been a ceremony by procuration in March in Vienna). She’s Marie-Antoinette’s grand-niece. Another bridge between the old regime and the new, an habit of Napoléon’s.
The couple will have a boy in March 1811, also named Napoléon. He's proclaimed king of Rome and imperial prince. Marie-Louise will also give their name to the conscripts of late 1813, the decree for their conscription having been promulgated by her.

#OTD in 1807, Napoléon creates the “Armée du Train”, the army branch that organizes and coordinates the military logistics, transport and support for the movement of the French Army. It is still in service, its motto is : “Et par l'Empereur, Vive le train !”
As stated by historian André Jouineau: “An army is nothing without logistical support and that of the Emperor could not have conquered Europe without the train drivers whose courage and self-denial, in often difficult circumstances, allowed him to win.” Napoléon recognized this.

#OTD in 1796 the Directory names Napoléon Bonaparte commander of the Army of Italy. A week later, he marries Joséphine de Beauharnais “quickly” (his word) and leaves for the front. When Napoléon arrives in Italy, he finds a French army in tatters.
Badly fed, badly equipped and demoralized, they are hanging by a thread. He knows that if this army is beaten, Austria could attack southern France and the French Republic would be in danger. He takes matters into his own hands immediately.
He transforms this ragtag army into a cunning military force. He will take his enemies totally by surprise and achieve astounding victories, some are still admired and studied today. It’s myth-busting Sunday! I guess you’ve heard various stories as to why Napoléon often had his hand on his stomach on portraits. Did his tummy hurt, poor boy? Or maybe he had some skin disease and kept scratching himself. His father died of stomach cancer, was he suffering too?
All of these are wrong. The reason why Napoléon had his hand on his stomach was… he thought it looked cool (basically). In more academic terms, it was fairly common to do so. It was just an appropriate posture for a leader, one that elevated him above others. So he adopted it.
As to its origins, the posture is often associated with Greek Antiquity statesman and orator Aeschines. He’s portrayed with a hand in his stomach, under his tunic. Napoléon always wanted to control the narrative about him, this was part of it. #napoleon #history #histodons #france #french #napoleonic #arthistory @histodons
