This is actually my first #nas ever. I am impressed with how silent it runs. And DSM is really simple to use.
The only problematic thing I found so far is the length of the LAN cables. Was only just long enough, maybe 3-4 cm slack. Was thinking for a moment during setup I would have to start moving furniture.

I prepared a backup in two different places (just in case) and was ready to wait a whole day to restore it, but #Synology #DSM broke all my expectations. After I moved my drives from an old DS223 to a new DS423+ and started it, it said: "Hey, looks like you are migrating from another NAS. Do you want to restore your system on a new NAS with a single button click?".
So far, DS423+ performance is super satisfactory. Especially #Plex. Sure, after the RAM upgrade from 2 to 6 GB.

I thought I might see if it could be a low-end #NAS for me. The general idea was to #backup up a couple of #macOS and #linux devices to a central location at home, and sync that location with encrypted cloud backups from a singe location.

Decided it was time to vacuum the dust from the #homelab #nas server, been on my to-do most of the year and sure enough the vents are all choked. After a good clean it appears the dust was capacitively coupled with the motherboard and vital for its function because now the server is dead while I work out time to bench the motherboard and work out what's gone wrong. 😣

I like it a lot, my only regret may be to have bought (not certified) #WesternDigital Red 4TB disks that use, unknowingly, #SMR technology. Not a big deal so far in practice though, even for Raid rebuilding (fingers crossed).
