Okay... so... I gave my talk about the of at GISS for its 60th anniversary.

I am a passable story teller after all.

I’ll give a text-version here... though not all at once… 40-minutes of the first 20 yrs.

____

In the beginning... climate ‘prediction' used Farmer's Almanacs... these were pretty awesome resources in knowing when to plant what crops.

They were pretty awesome, that is, until humans intervened…

Releasing what we all knew :

“July 2023 was 0.43 degrees Fahrenheit (F) (0.24 degrees Celsius (C)) warmer than any other July in NASA’s record, and it was 2.1 F (1.18 C) warmer than the average July between 1951 and 1980… warmest month in our record, which goes back to 1880”

Equilibrium Climate Sensitivity, the amount of warming expected 2xCO2, lends much uncertainty to future projections. Models designed with historical climate in mind must predict our future outside that range.

Many scientists believe that constraints will narrow this uncertainty.

Interested & post-PhD? Come work w Jess Tierney in , me in & others using the climate model:

Super interesting seminar speaker this week at ::

Kelton Minor does research at the intersection and

Night time temperatures have been ticking up, and human bodies need that diurnal cycle of cool to rest well—

Particularly for every increase in temperature above ~50F / 10C , folks lose sleep.

Fascinating, check it out for yourself:

Tonight, I (in my mid-40s), was the most senior researcher who

endeavored to go to the “happy hour” social organized monthly by young

scientists in university

And — knock me over w a feather — met 2! young researchers in this gathering whom I knew 1st from Mastodon, on my own instance of fediscience.org

Grateful for new (young colleague) IRL friends

Lab Chief Gavin Schmidt : record made slightly differently than NOAA, but similar trends. 2022 tied 2015 for the 5th HOTTEST year in the instrumental record (1880-present) w 1.1degC warming vs to late 19th century.
Last 9 years are warmest in the record, w last 8 have more than 1degC anomaly compared to late 19th century.
Warming more over land than ocean.
Warming more in North than south.
Warming more in Arctic.

Warmest La Niña year on record
