Eileen Collins is a retired NASA astronaut and USAF colonel. She was the first woman to pilot the Space Shuttle and the first to command a Space Shuttle mission.
In 2005 she commanded NASA's "return to flight" mission after the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster, to test safety improvements and resupply the International Space Station (ISS). She was the first astronaut to fly the orbiter through a complete 360-degree pitch maneuver.

The later #Apollo SIV-B third stages were smashed into the moon for seismic data, but the ones used for Apollo 8-12 are still out there somewhere!

Who's that streaking through the sky? It's not Santa Claus, it's #Apollo8 screaming across the sky to bring all the world joy, #OTD December 27, 1968. This photograph was taken at 40,000 feet by a nearby aircraft as Apollo 8 reentered the Earth's atmosphere. To the moon and back - the greatest pioneering adventure in this history of humankind was a resounding success. Happy #Apollomas all, until next year!

As a young man in 1927, he made a daring, first of it's kind flight across the Atlantic Ocean from NYC all the way to Paris. He lived to see the day that man would cross the vast and empty ocean of deep space. Truly incredible, the march of progress within one human lifetime.
