My words, thoughts and ponderings for March includes a reminder why less is (still) necessary, some thoughts on what the new National Cultural Policy could mean for South Australia, a call to ban book banning, and some (belated) New Year’s resolutions for Boards. katelarsenkeys.substack.com/p/

"The next five years will be important to rebuild what was lost. What comes next requires fortitude and imagination to create a truly vibrant literary culture." Love this from Jessica Alice in Meanjin meanjin.com.au/blog/writers-vo

‘Revive’ is an appropriate name for a policy that recognises its deficit starting point and the sector’s ‘post’-COVID exhaustion. It is ambitious without losing perspective on either how hard things are or how much work there is to go. Whether it’s a game-changer or just a very good start, it leaves me with unfamiliar hope.

My biggest disappointment is with the new ’s continuing partisanship…

Arts and culture policy is only sustainable if it is bipartisan, particularly given no national arts and culture approach has ever survived a change in government in Australia…

We need to be more than a once-in-a-generation opportunity. We need it to be the status quo.

Writers Australia will be set up under the National Cultural Policy to "provide direct support to the literature sector from 2025." A focus on writers' remuneration, local literary awards, and promoting the work poets, should be among WA's goals.

So, Australia has a brand-new . And, you know what? I think it’s pretty great.

Catch me talking about my @ArtsHub article and walking the line between cautious optimism and being a critical friend on TikTok:

The is ‘disappointingly silent on the climate crisis. (…) Creative Australia’s re-engagement with the philanthropic community will need to be informed by the reduced tolerance for ‘artwashing’, dismiss the ‘all funding is good funding’ rhetoric, and not disadvantage organisations who approach fundraising from an environmental or ethical perspective.” More in Artshub artshub.com.au/news/opinions-a

Yesterday’s launch, dubbed Revive by the Federal Government, promised ‘a new era for Australia’s arts, entertainment and cultural sector’ and delivered much-needed optimism at a time when the stakes for artists, arts organisations and audiences have never been so high. I shared my thoughts on the new policy with ArtsHub (artshub.com.au/news/opinions-a).

My role* was very small but it still feels special to have been part of the process to develop the new National Cultural Policy.

There is so much work to do over the next five years and beyond, but Revive is a start. Let’s go!

*I was one of the members of the Policy Advisory Group to the Minister for the Arts. You can read about the process and download a copy of the policy itself here: arts.gov.au/what-we-do/nationa

3/3 (including responding to inauthentic art), funding for First Nations language programs will be included, local content quotas for streaming services will be introduced and the library lending scheme payments will be extended to e-books.

Other priorities include diversity in the arts, regional arts and the video games industry. Interestingly there also seems to be an anti-elitist art push too. Have I missed anything?

1/4 The announcement today will be big. I've been following bits and pieces that have been reported over the last few weeks. The Australia Council will be expanded under the name Creative Australia. This new body sounds like a behemoth. It'll be doing what the Australia Council currently does, plus subsuming Creative Partnerships Australia and encompassing a new First Nations-led body, a contemporary music industry body (Music Australia), a writers and illustrators body

Not a whole lot of hope for next week’s launch. (Extremely unscientific social media) poll results say 62% predict no more cuts, but no more money either. All fingers still firmly crossed.
