See you out there today at our peaceful priest & die-in at 5022 Joyce Street, at the office of Health Minister @adriandix today April 28, on this #NationalDayofMourning
Today is the #NationalDayOfMourning in Canada.
It honours workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness on the job.
The day was first celebrated in Canada in 1991.
April 28 was chosen because on that day in 1914, the Workers Compensation Act was passed in Ontario.
I'm embarrassed that this has existed most of my life and I only just learned about it. #NationalDayOfMourning

"For each new morning with its light,
For rest and shelter of the night,
For health and food, for love and friends,
For everything Thy goodness sends."

"#Thanksgiving itself is a day of mourning for Native people, not just Wampanoag people," notes one #NativeAmerican: those who celebrate the holiday need to recognized that it's a #NationalDayOfMourning for most #IndigenousPeople in the United States...

While you are 'celebrating' and eating a surplus of food, my grandma and I will be fasting.
Survivors of residential 'schools' began to share their stories after hearing about the unmarked graves in Kamloops, my grandma being one of them.
For 86 years, I was kept in the dark about my auntie's murder.
They didn't even tell my family she died of 'pneumonia' until months after it happened.
They nearly erased her, as well as our language.

For many, today is a National Day of Mourning, a “day of remembrance & spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism & oppression that Indigenous people continue to experience worldwide.”

That was the message of Wamsutta Frank James, a Wampanoag man whose censored speech in 1970 identified the true culprit of the trouble: historians (now known as #histodons!) A reliable path to the past does not run through memory but rather through accurate history, which must include Native knowledge of the past. James' words helped spur the creation of the #NationalDayofMourning. To wit, here's a toast to all the more accurate paths to the past we have all yet to walk together.

"This day also gives us a chance to look at and change stories we have about our families and ourselves. Thanksgiving is based on myths that hide and erase the genocide that the United States is founded upon. What would it mean to tell a different story; an honest story?"

@theghostoftomjoad here's the thing I'm going to nitpick on, because how we phrase things is important and has an effect on the overall outlook.
I don't think that anything I'm saying is a "contrarian" view.
what I'm saying is facts in regards to how Indigenous peoples have been treated in this country, and that this supposed holiday is an incredibly racist and whitewashed part of history that we as non-Indigenous Americans need to confront. #NationalDayOfMourning #NationalDayOfMourning2022

We will be thankful when the U.S. rights past wrongs by paying reparations and returning land to the First Nations. #nationaldayofmourning
