Trump trial set for March 4? Nooooooo! ๐ฑ

"We are not the slapping-together kind."
Gary Cooper as Professor Bertram Potts in BALL OF FIRE (dir. Howard Hawks)
That line is his rebuke of the benefactor's accountant who suggested that Potts and his colleagues slap together their encyclopedia to save money.
Cooper's grammarian is delightfully straightlaced. His panic over the changing English language prompts him to leave the ivory tower and go among the masses, to hear it as it's being spoken..

Sixth (and, I think, last): This one's for editors. When you're working on a project, stick to the dictionary preferred by your style guide. Chicago likes M-W 11th Collegiate.
When you're writing for yourself, use as many as you like. The issue is, they won't all agree. And trying to find "The Answer" is difficult, when sources are all acceptable (Collins, Oxford, Webster's New World, Encarta, Random House . . .).
Enough. Go enjoy #NationalGrammarDay

#NationalGrammarDay @grammargirl asked about our favorite words. I guess mine is "judicious." I always want to use good judgment.
For #NationalGrammarDay , I'll note that in our department you know your dissertation is finished when your advisor asks you to change all the "thats" to "whiches" and then, on the next revision, all the "whiches" to "thats".

@GramrgednAngel Thank you for this post. I will attempt to dial down my Pavlovian response.
Didnโt know you had a blog! Youโre in my feed reader now. Happy #NationalGrammarDay!
It's #NationalGrammarDay. You can't have language w/o grammar; that's how important grammar is.
@grammargirl Yes to all the words, and the Oxford comma, but I'll spotlight onomatopoeia
Boom! ๐ฅ
I wrote a blog post for #NationalGrammarDay. Enjoy it. Or don't. But I hope it will give you something to think about, either way.

Itโs #NationalGrammarDay! To celebrate, hereโs a short video on the surprisingly murky development of a basic piece of English grammar, the pronoun โSheโ https://youtu.be/sbzbdMym8wA

today we celebrate #NationalGrammarDay, while also observing the unintended irony that on the March 4, 2008 inaugural event, it was commemorated by then still president George W. Bush... https://www.grammarly.com/blog/a-brief-history-of-national-grammar-day/

Still looking for an enjoyable book to read on #NationalGrammarDay ?
REBEL WITH A CLAUSE: Tales and Tips from a Roving Grammarian by @grammartable (Ellen Jovin) is an excellent option. Far from didactic, it's a delightful collection of experiences with everyday people asking questions about #GUMmyStuff at Ellen's literal grammar table, a card table she hauls around the country and sets up on corners or in parks or outside libraries.
Kindness, understanding, descriptiveness. Nothing's better.

Before I call it a night, here's another great book for #NationalGrammarDay AND #NationalBookDay (TODAY!).
BUT CAN I START A SENTENCE WITH "BUT"?: Advice from the Chicago Style Q&A, with a foreword by Carol Fisher Saller (University of Chicago Press, 2016)
Does what it says on the tin, as they say.
Example:
Q: Can I use the first person?
A: Evidently.

Don't know what to read for #NationalGrammarDay
How about
ACCIDENCE WILL HAPPEN: A Recovering Pedant's Guide to English Language and Style, by Oliver Kamm (Pegasus Books, 2016)
Honestly, everything you need to know about this book is right there in the title. It's sharp, witty, incisive, and educational in the best way.
#NationalGrammarDay is THIS SATURDAY, March 4!
Yes, I'm an editor. No, IDGAF how you speak or write *unless* you pay me for my opinion. I won't be watching extra closely to see who "makes an error."
Most of those errors aren't truly errors. They're usages, they're valid, and they're all English.
I hang around linguists and lexicographers. They've taught me chill. I had a lot to start with, but I have more now.
IOW, I could care less. (Yep, I said that, and you know EXACTLY what it means.)
@GramrgednAngel My favorite fun grammar book is The Transitive Vampire. Not sure if it is still in print.

@junecasagrande I'm telling people to buy a book of yours for #NationalGrammarDay, so when the jump in sales happens you know who to thank.
