The fate of the only wild horse herd left in #NorthDakota is in jeopardy. The #TheodoreRooseveltNationalPark is home to a historic herd of 180 wild horses who are believed to be descendants of #SittingBull 's horses and are related to the rare #Nokota breed – but the #NationalParkService (NPS) has made clear that they want to eliminate the entire #herd .

Took a little road trip up to The Great Valley overlook on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia yesterday. This is the location I was at when I photographed the Great Valley Sunset (posted the image earlier this week).

The sign reads: The Great Valley extends through the Appalachians from New York to Alabama. Here the valley is confined by the Alleghenies on the west and by the Blue Ridge on the east. The Great Warrior Path of the Iroquois and Cherokee was used by the Scotch-Irish and German pioneers from Pennsylvania when they migrated down the valley to settle this area in 1730-50. --- United States Department of the Interior, National Park Service.

I'm blessed to live in the Blue Ridge Mountains and to be so close to one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Is anybody else experiencing problems to display the embedded maps on the #US #NationalParkService’s website?

Whenever I open a site with a map, only the icons of the displayed items (like trailheads) are displayed but not the (#mapbox/#openstreetmap) map data? I am accessing the website from Germany. Maybe this is a geographical restriction. Does the page work for anybody out there? https://www.nps.gov/yell/planyourvisit/hiking.htm

I took these photos Sunday morning of the #PrettyRocks slide area in #DenaliNP. Quite dramatic to see how this section of road has failed so entirely in the past couple of years.

A contractor will begin work this summer to build a bridge across the slide area. The project is anticipated by the NPS to take several years to complete, wrapping up in summer ‘26.
