It's all about the power of solidarity: Maroons "formed communities and,
oftentimes, plotted uprisings to liberate other Africans. They bonded with Native American communities. It was here they found allies and fortifications for their struggle."

My personal experience with Harry Belafonte, when he met us, the Longest Walk II 2008 participants and supporters, in Washington DC on the National Mall. He was a staunch supporter of Native American/Indigenous rights. We "walked" from Alcatraz to DC. I crisscrossed and walked both North & South routes. (Actor Danny Glover was there too).

A stereotype in past research toward Native American history is that Native American communities had simple and primitive cultures and were mostly 'reactors' to European colonialism. worldhistory.org/review/339/pe

Found this gem hiking in a local land conservancy. Apparently these stone chambers are scattered around the area, and are believed to have been built by Native Americans.

If you are interested in Edward Curtis (and I wasn't until I read the book), I recommend Short Nights of the Shadowcatcher by Timothy Egan. Curtis appears to be one of the less problematic ethnographers of the 20th century, although I am happy to be corrected on that by those who know more.

AMERICA'S OLDEST CITY? CARAL (VIDEO)

From Wikipedia:
"Caral was inhabited between approximately 26th century BC and 20th century B,.. Caral has been described by its excavators as the oldest urban center in the Americas. This claim has been challenged by the discovery of other ancient sites nearby, such as Bandurria, Peru. Accommodating more than 3,000 inhabitants..."

Hikers don’t often realize they’re passing through the traditional homelands of many Indigenous nations.

In today’s episode of The Green Tunnel Podcast, we’re focusing on some of the Indigenous lands the Appalachian Trail runs through.
