Taking the long way down the mountain through an old growth hemlock forest. The trees here are immense, 150+feet high. Footsteps are muffled by the forest duff and it’s nearly silent except for woodpeckers tapping away.

First image: mountain ash, Sorbus sitchensis, in its fall color already. 2 and 3: when a hemlock tree rots away, the cores from its branches are left behind like fossils.

Image 1: ancient hemlocks with the peak behind. Everything here is ancient and takes forever to grow. Image 2: the suspension bridge is out in place every July by the park service and taken down in September. The rest of the year the torrent coming off the glacier is too wide to cross. 3: the historic fire lookout of Oark Butte, a popular view point. 4: view of Baker Peak from the fire lookout.

First two images: pearly everlasting (Anaphalis margaritacea) forms large blankets in the rocky parts of the meadows. It’s a kind of aster or daisy. Second two images are purple monkey flower (Mimulus lewisii), another wildflower that’s viable in the garden.

Corn lily on the left (Veratrum viride) looming a bit tattered this late in the season. On the right: does anyone know this plant? I’ve seen it before but can’t place it. Growing on a rocky stream side in part sun at about 5000 ft. It’s lovely.

Last weekend I had a chance to visit the Mt Baker Wilderness in Washington’s North Cascades. Follow along for a flora-heavy photo thread about Washington’s third highest peak.

I adore this garden. And I’m not just saying that because I designed and planted it. But because it’s a lovely place to be, full of little places, life and hope. And I think it’s a good start to show what can be done with a mix of , edible perennials, and ornamentals.

This isn’t the best photo but you can get a sense of the upper seating area and the view down the valley.

There is a glorious rose, 'Gertrude Jekyll', growing up the back of the pergola. Behind it is a line of Meadowsweet, to the left is an Aronia bush.

And at the heart of the garden is this chonking great pergola! Again, made by David Carter from The Coppice Plot, it is *so darned sturdy*. He set the main uprights on padstones. This pergola is going to last longer the new build house in the background, and that’s the truth.

The pergola looks down the wooded valley, and it really is a magical place.

Also, near this point I experimented with using crushed concrete as a growing medium, following John Little’s lead (see tiktok.com/@grassroofco )

The idea is, low nutrients favour plants other than grass, and the alkaline conditions favour alkaline loving plants, like Creeping Thyme.

Works an absolute treat, I wish I had more crushed concrete 😉

Back on the ground, looking back at the house, you can see how the beds are filling up. Sweet Woodruff has turned out to be a champion ground cover in the conditions (the inner curved bed is very wet in the winter, dries out in the summer), and there’s Silverweed too, under the 'Harlow Carr' rose I think.

I have taken some photos of the Clifftop garden, kind of a wildlife-ornamental-, lots of edibles in the mix. plenty of &

Here’s a thread of the pics.

First up, David Hunter’s really rather lovely rustic Larch fencing sets off the garden against the lush wooded valley. The rose is 'Harlow Carr' from David Austen. Geranium’s client’s own

Here's a photo from our morning walk under a nicely overcast sky with some drizzle. :)

This beautiful golden-yellow color along our trails is kindly provided by Isocoma menziesii aka Menzies' Goldenbush — a small shrub in the Asteraceae (sunflower) family that typically blooms summer into fall here.

Vertical, might need a click/tap to see as intended.

! The today are with a bumblebee in the process of entering the turtle-y mouth. Next is a which has all the sudden naturalized all over my yard. After that is a doing remarkably well considering it was a tiny plug a couple months ago. And finally is which is having a very good year and favorite of honey bees.
