There has been a lot of discussion of the term #NativeSpeaker in linguistics of late. But what about the terms #fluent or #proficient (or fluent vs. proficient)? @savithry and coauthors write about this a little w.r.t. language revitalization (citing Davis 2018), which is what I've been thinking about too. If anyone wants to have a mini-discussion of this issue, I'd love to hear it!

How do you grt around language editing when writing a manuscript? Do you have native co-author, a ghost editor or do you buy language edition in some kind of company?

What I miss terribly during #podcasting: A #nativeSpeaker teaching me all these complicated #words like mycobacterium, gut microbiota etc. So often I have to google it and that takes time. But I have to because in #English it sounds often very different to my original #German #Latin with a meanwhile #French accent!
I speak French daily, and I only hear German on TV/radio. We also speak #Alsatian here, an #Alemannic #language. And mix all #languages merrily in one sentence: #Europlais.😁

There seems to be a well-intentioned push to get rid of the notion of the #nativespeaker in #linguistics from some quarters, which in some contexts probably makes sense.

But as long as the criticial period is still a thing, it's not going to work for many linguistic thing that closely touch on the neuro-cognitive or linguistic competence, such as syntactic acceptability judgments etc.

Politicizing the term would then be a way of lessening its scientific relevance by emphasizing its ideological dimension: native speaker would primarily be an ideology of the nation-state."
