I was just thinking before I saw your post:
Counting is actually more complicated than it seems.
How do you count the islands in an archipelago? It depends on what *counts* as an island and what is just a rock in the sea.
How do you count the branches of a tree? It depends on what *counts* as a branch and what is merely a twig or a bump on a twig.
(This is probably where we get the polysemy in "count" meaning "to reckon" or "to matter" from #Linguistics #NaturalLanguage #Semantics #Semiotics )
This lead me to realise that numbers, like discrete objects on which concept they are based, are an illusion/product of our minds.

For instance, "ready rice" sounds off to me. But "rice that's ready" sounds more natural.
