The National Parks and Wildlife Service has published it's first strategic plan, and an accompanying progress tracker. Since Malcolm Noonan took over, the NPWS budget has gone from 23 million euro to 80 million, and there are some good results to be seen in increased prosecutions and species reintroductions. But the Irish environment is *so* degraded, there is a huge amount still to do.

Scotland will be designating a new national park by 2026. However, when it comes to protecting and restoring nature, our national parks are, in many ways, notional parks. We need our national parks to be bold and ambitious when it comes to halting the loss of nature.
