Sunset Tree
Navajo National Monument, AZ

A small gem of a park west of Kayenta. There are trails to view ancient ruins (some require a guide.) A small campground includes a paved and primitive loop. There is a visitor/interpretive center with a native gift shop.

Junction Ruin & Canyon Wall
Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ
[vertical image]

Last Thursday I posted a close up photo of this ancient puebloan ruin. See the post here: techhub.social/@bosquebill/110

Today I show the entire facade of the canyon which barely fit in the picture. The white sandstone at the top of the image is the floor of the mesa top. You can see autumn cottonwoods on the canyon floor.

Honor the Life of Roy Wiegand bikemonterey.org/honor-the-lif

The collision occurred on eastbound San Miguel Canyon Road, west of Hambey Lane, in Monterey County. California Highway Patrol indicated that both Roy Wiegand and the driver of a Ford Ranger were traveling east on San Miguel Canyon Road, and Roy was biking in the designated bike lane, when the driver made an unsafe right turn and hit Roy with his truck.

More details from Madilynne Medina in SF Gate, "California musician dies in bike collision on charity ride."

We mourn the death of Roy Wiegand, killed July 29 while bicycling in Monterey County.

One way to honor Roy's life: make a donation in his memory to the Navajo Water Project. As Roy said in June about why he was again biking to raise funds for that project, "One out of three Navajo live without a toilet or a sink....We're trying in a small way to right some wrongs." —Roy Wiegand

Junction Ruin
Canyon de Chelly National Monument, AZ

The ruin is named (by us bilagáana at any rate) because it is located at the junction between the main canyon, Canyon de Chelly, and Canyon del Muerto. It is closer to the canyon mouth than White House Ruins that I've featured previously. View point is on the main southern road.

Highly competitive schools will not be permitted to factor race into their decision making, which reduces our access to these schools,” said UNM professor Wendy Greyeyes. “It is disappointing that the majority of supreme court justices don’t recognize that race is still a reality for our country.”

White House Ruin (wide view)
Canyon de Chelly, AZ

A few weeks ago I posted a close up of these ruins taken from this vantage with a telephoto lens. Today I show a wide angle so you can appreciate the scale of the ruins versus the immensity of the canyon. Enlarge to spot the ruins at the bottom of the far side just to the left of center; there are two tiers. Diné still populate the canyon.

“I think what makes the Navajo Nation more open-minded is that there are young leaders that are coming into leadership roles,” Tomahawk Martini said. “A lot of older leaders have been more influenced by boarding schools and forced colonization, that whole generation where it was Christian-based.“

Supreme Court Keeps Navajo Nation Waiting for Water
==

Decades of negotiations between the tribe and Arizona over water rights have proven fruitless. The court case was the Navajo Nation’s bid to accelerate the process and secure water for its reservation.

rules against Nation in water supply case

The court pointed to treaties signed in the 1800s to support its decision. The suit comes as water from the is scarce and states in the arid southwest are tangled in disputes over water allocation.

By Ariane de Vogue, CNN, Jun 23, 2023

"The suit comes as water from the Colorado River is scarce and states located in the arid southwest are tangled in disputes concerning water allocation. The tribe claims that while the average person on the Navajo reservation uses seven gallons of water a day, that national average is 80 to 100 gallons.

"The nation, which extends across , and and lies within the drainage basin of the Colorado River, has signed two treaties with the United States. In 1868, the United States promised the tribe a permanent homeland.

"Shay Dvoretzky, a lawyer for the Navajo Nation, told the Supreme Court: that the Navajos 'made clear' that they understood the 'promise of a permanent homeland' in the 1800s to include 'adequate water for agriculture and raising livestock. Hauled from miles away, water can cost up to twenty times more than it does in neighboring off-Reservation communities,' he argued. "

The largest tribal event is Pride. Here are some pics I took from today’s event. Last year, I covered the Heard Museum’s drag show and all hell broke loose with lawmakers wanting to outlaw kids from drag shows.

Today the crowd had children, teens, middle age adults and elders - it was great!

"The U.S. Supreme Court said the United States is not required 'to take affirmative steps to secure water for the Tribe' because that provision is not explicitly stated in the Navajo Treaty of 1868, according to its ruling in a 5-4 vote in Arizona v. Navajo Nation, released Thursday."
