I just had a major 'oh, THAT'S why' moment and wanted to share.
Among my many #nerd -doms are #etymology and #navalhistory .
I just completed a jigsaw of a view of Bremerhaven with a curious tower. Obvs I needed to know more.
It's a lighthouse, or 'leuchtturm' in German(bonus #stationery)
Thanks to @wikipedia, it is the rear of a pair of "leading lights". If a vessel approaching a shallow or dangerous navigation does so with these lights aligned, it's on the safest course.
Hence its wider use.

Fresh off our reopening, a user wanted to know if the Titanic was a badly designed ship, or if the accident was just crew error. /u/YourlocalTitanicguy reveals just how complicated this question is, and explores the #NavalHistory involved.

As discussed in ep. 4.20, #OTD in 1812 (at 4:20 PM coincidentally), the first shots of the War of 1812 were fired by the USS President. Listen to the episode to learn more! #Warof1812 #navalhistory https://www.presidenciespodcast.com/420-once-more-unto-the-breach/
Copper story. This one about how the phrase 'copper bottomed' entered the lexicon. How a tiny marine invertebrate threatened an Empire.

OTD in 1847, Lord Cochrane was reappointed a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath by Queen Victoria.
He had been stripped of his Navy rank and knighthood after circumstantial evidence led to his conviction in the stock exchange trial in 1814.

How did Revolutionary Americans augment their fledgling U.S. Navy to take on the powerful Royal Navy? How did the British Navy respond?
In the latest episode of Ben Franklin’s World, Liz speaks with Eric Jay Dolin about his latest book, Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American Revolution, discussing privateers (not pirates!) in the War of Independence.

Can anyone in #histodon #navalHistory confirm or deny that the first Royal Navy aircraft carriers were built slower on purpose because they were designed to stay with battleships?
I read it in one book from 1970 but can't confirm it online.
On this day in 1800, 24 year old Thomas Cochrane climbed on board HMS SPEEDY and read his commission to the assembled crew.
"By virtue of the power and authority to us given, we do hereby constitute and appoint you Commander of His Majesty's sloop the Speedy,..."
