Neanderthals, our ancient relatives, were not just primitive beings. Recent engravings and objects found in archaeological sites indicate they possessed cognitive abilities on par with Homo sapiens. Evidence of cave art and the conscious use of pigments suggest their capacity for abstract thinking and artistic creativity.

Neanderthals built weird structures inside a cave in France; we don’t know why. The structures are made from hundreds of broken stalagmites arranged in circular patterns, dating back to at least 176,000 years ago. This is the oldest evidence of human construction ever found, and it shows that Neanderthals had complex cognitive abilities and social organization. iflscience.com/neanderthals-bu

Neanderthals may have spoken a language similar to modern humans, according to a new study. The researchers analyzed the shape and size of Neanderthal skulls and found evidence of a complex vocal tract. This suggests that Neanderthals could produce a range of sounds and communicate effectively with each other.

“The challenge here, then, is that we now know that Homo naledi, in addition to and and and a few others, were engaging in the kind of behavior that we, even just a few decades ago, thought was unique to us,” he said. “That means we need to rethink the timing of fire use, of meaning-making and of the burial of the dead in hominin history.” edition.cnn.com/2023/06/05/wor

Hundreds of faint stripes, dots and wavy lines that adorn a cave wall in central France are the oldest known engravings made by Neanderthals, according to scientists who analysed the markings.

The patterns, called finger flutings, appear on sections of the longest and most even wall of the cave in La Roche-Cotard in the Loire valley, and were created more than 57,000 years ago, before modern humans arrived in the region.
