Please never say "given up" when discussing adoption. It's a horrible term that has no place in our community. Children are 'placed' for adoption, and sometimes taken, but never 'given up'. Whenever I organically notice negative adoption language on wikipedia, I edit it. Decided to check how much of it is out there and... I've got some work to do.
