@MelodyWainscott how are the rhodes?

I cannot believe moss is this green, but it is!
I took this on my daily walk on Sunday at Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden just south of Seattle, the world’s largest rhododendron collection and bonus: it’s in a PNW forest!
I’m going to be walking there, daily, to witness the bloom in 2023 and will be sharing it with you using #RhodyGarden.
You can find out more about the collection at rhodygarden.org
If you like it please share/boost it!

Meet the mighty Elwah River out on the Olympic Peninsula. It’s not just another pretty place but also the sight of the world’s largest dam removal project.

This mighty river & its waterfall are called “Sol Duc” from their Quileute name, /só:liɬt'aqʷ/, meaning "sparkling waters.” The river flows from the Olympic Mountains to the Pacific out on the Olympic Peninsula in WA state. And though it’s not visible here the mist coming off these falls can saturate clothing quickly when standing close.

Meet the “water lily camellia,” Camellia x williamsii, a hybrid. The large evergreen shrub has these lovely formal double camellia inflorescences and they sometimes bloom here in the PNW as early as January. Don’t we love a precocious bloomer! This particularly delicious blossom is from 2022, bottom left is the original shade; ring is a #Pictish symbol for protection.

Sometimes, out in the rainforests of the PNW, your camera captures “Mossquatch” families like these, first cousins to ents, trance dancing through the ferny forest floors.

I bet y’all love a water element in your woods. If you’re drawn to flowing water you might be a “fluviophile.” The word origin for Middle English “fluvio” is the Latin fluvialis < fluvius, a river < fluere, to flow. “Phile” is Greek from philos for “dear, beloved.” This lovely flowing pool is on Barnes Creek in the lowland old growth forest near Crescent Lake, WA, out on the Olympic Peninsula.

I see lots of folks here spend quality time communing with forests. If that’s you, you may be a “nemophilist,” which is a lover or haunter of forests. This obscure word derives from the Greek “nemos” grove and “philos” affection. Today I want to share one of my favorite mossy forest haunts out on the Olympic Peninsula in the PNW. It’s an old growth lowland forest along the shores of Barnes Creek near Crescent Lake, WA.

Sometime the mossy dreams of we bryophiliacs surprise us when they rewild our waking landscapes. This mossy haunt hides in Seattle.

Assuming #bryophilia is a word I’m definitely a #bryophiliac. And I’m loving the #moss #community on Mastodon! Here’s one of my mossy haunts in the #PNW out on the #OlympicPeninsula I want to share. I call this my #SecretForest. #Mosstodon #Nemophilist #WordHoarder
