An English-language version titled "99 Red Balloons", with lyrics by #KevinMcAlea, was also released on the album 99 Luftballons in 1984 after widespread success of the original in Europe and Japan. The English version is not a #directTranslation of the German original and contains lyrics with a somewhat different meaning.

That actually was a good song.

I don't think I've ever really heard the English version, though. In France, it was the German version that became a huge hit.

Because of that, I never really understood what it was about until we studied it in my German class in college, which rekindled my love for the song at the end of the 90s after spending the decade dissing New Wave music.
