Have been a collaborator in a project about moderately preterm infants and long-term risks, a pretty straight forward approach. We thought!
Manuscript is now resubmitted with… population attributable fractions, sibling analyses, a wide range of sensitivity analyses, analyses including post-term infants, DAGs, etc-etc.
And no matter how data was sliced - results were the same.

Few newborns in Sweden! The total annual nb for 2023 seems to become ~100k, which is clearly lower than usual. Whether good or bad - fewer deliveries means less patients coming to the NICUs and the Stockholm NICUs has had a relatively good summer with less crammed units and fewer transports due to lack of capacity.

Will be some buzz today about that #FDA has approved the first #RSV vaccine for pregnant women. Great of course.
But to spoil some of the party: in the trial, vaccine efficacy was lower and in fact non-sign, in infant <3m, i.e. the most vulnerable. So, more effective stuff is still needed, and esp for infants <6w.

Latest from my academic desk, pop-based study (whole of Sweden, 3.1M individuals born 1987-2016) about “Severity of preterm birth and the risk of pulmonary hypertension in childhood”

Short version: the more preterm at birth, the higher the risk of pulmonary hypertension, but absolute risks were very low. And almost all affected were diagnosed before 2y of age (important message for follow up clinics)

I really wish we can discuss #22w outcomes. I think there are two tails on this story. I vote for Prof Namba AKA @JAPANicu about how to achieve good short term outcomes and for example Prof Ådén fr Sweden sharing about the less good longterm outcomes from Sweden.
