April 3: on

To support his family, small-town boy Domenico moves to in the hope to find a . Eventually he's employed, as a clerk in a drab office replacing a senior worker who died. While the days drag on, only interrupted by coffee shop small talk with fellow Antonietta, the office draws nearer.

With the dark absurdity of coming out of fascism and having to run a real-world country with a naive ineptitude – represented by the too-large-borrowed-from-father-suits – and pretence childlike bureaucratic procedures, Ermanno Olmi's Il posto [The Job] (1961) is a wonderfully sharp observation of .

STROMBOLI (’50) has an extremely mixed reputation, then and now. Feels like people have strong views on it, and not always for the best. Put me deeply in the “pro” column. Thought this was something truly special and memorable. I guess I can see why US audiences reacted so viscerally, the glamorous Ingrid in such settings and not that likeable. But that for me was a big piece of its power- and I did sympathize with her. A very compelling watch with a fascinating finale.

- The Filmmaker

I realised there was so much more to a photo than snapping an image. There was a thought process, elements that come together to create something beautiful, but most importantly - there was a story.

Talking about interiority reflected on the exteriority. Karin, a war refugee in an internment camp in Italy flirts w/ a young Italian soldier to get out of the camp. They get married, move to the soldier's home, , an isolated volcanic island with very religious, conservative inhabitants await. Worldly and ambitious Karin finds that there is absolutely nothing in Stromboli that she likes. She has a volcanic desire to live!

Usually I get my free heating when the sun shines through the windows but today is a no so I could happily join this fabulous sun chasing scene from Miracolo a Milano.

Miracolo a Milano was directed by Vittorio de Sica in 1951 and is a ferocious fantasy on human greed narrated with enormous empathy and humanity. It inspired the writing of Gabriel García and took the flying bicycle scene and made it its own in E.T.

One of the great masterpieces of Italian , and one of my favourite of all time.
