One of Neptune's Dark Spots Finally Seen From Earth
When NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft flew past Neptune in 1989, it revealed the ice-giant planet for the first time. One surface feature was a mysterious dark spot that faded away before any Earth telescopes could capture it. New images from ESO's Very Large Telescope show a dark spot in Neptune's atmosphere, with other bright spots nearby. It's believed these are caused by air particles darkening in a layer below the main visible haze layer. Astronomers can continue observing with various ground and space-based telescopes to watch how Neptune's atmosphere changes over time.

Researchers have monitored #Neptune for over 30 years with the #Keck Observatory (since 2002), the Lick Observatory (2018-2019), and the #Hubble Space Telescope (since 1994).
One neat result comes out of this data. The number of clouds on Neptune seems to be correlated with the solar cycle. The sun puts out the maximum amount of ultraviolet light during the solar cycle's peak. Two years later, more clouds appear on Neptune.
