#tiere

Such a noisy chatter of whistles & scratches by the river this morning--much of it made by the babies in the bottom of this "sock" that is the oriole's nest I found. Here are some scenes from the merry (to me), busy (to the orioles*) to-do I spent a long while watching and listening to on the trail.
*These are technically "Bullock's" orioles, but I like to call them canopy orioles, because that's where I find them, and nobody owns the birds. 😉

I am excited to report that new baby egrets are still joining the now-nearly-fledged little noisemakers of yesterday's posts. Here are three of the newer babies looking around from their safety seats in the shade of their parent early this morning.

relatedly, check out these amazing swallow nests by the lake michigan shoreline in evanston, il. these are at northwestern university, facing the lake.
these are full-mud nests with more of a "vase" shape. i don't think the nest i found is a swallow nest.
#ForestForensics: who made this unusual nest that's mostly mud, but on the outside has some grass? i found it below a tree in wheeling, il. this nest had some weight to it! i can see why it fell...

The fledgling panic seems to be over.
For two days, the birds (sparrows, finches, wrens) have been chased by their giant fledglings demanding food.
The noise and mad flying has been pure chaos.
Today, all is calm.
Juvenile (correct me if I'm wrong?) house sparrow--one of many house sparrows of different genders and ages making happy chaos (or so it seemed, at least, to me) up in the pines at a parklet near my home. The sunshine, like the energy of the sparrows, could not be contained (or, rather, I didn't contain it 😅).
They also build the most amazing nests!!! These nests hang up to 3 ft from trees. They lay their fertilized eggs lower in the nest and one unfertilized egg at the top to trick predators. They live in colonies so some trees have a beautiful collection of such nests.

I found a new nemesis bird! The oropendola. They are large, loud, colorful, everywhere, and yet I haven't been able to get a single good photo of any of them.

Just checked up on the baby ravens and they are not only getting So Big, they are learning to fly!! One was off with eir parent (no photo because too easy to startle there), while the other three were in the nest, testing their wings and just being gorgeous good birds.

I love corvids, but today when I saw crows chasing a Coopers hawk, I thought- serves you right, crows!! I've seen far too many crows raiding sparrows' nests lately.

I made the short trek this morning to look in on the great egrets nesting off a ridge trail in a local mountain park. No babies yet, but nest-building is in full swing.
The birds were simultaneously both soaring like ghostly spirits overhead and squabbling and chuckling like chickens as they traded building materials and tamped down the floors of their nascent nests with their feet.

Busy, busy cliff swallows.
Here they are collecting mud to build their #nests (which they're building all along the ledge of one side of the same highway overpass under which sits the raven's nest I'm also watching; I guess it's prime real estate for local #birds?).
This video barely captures just how frantic and how many they are around this part of the lake, but it's a sort of mesmerizing little window on their behavior. #Oregon
The raven chicks are getting bigger! Here they are having a family sing-along with one of their parents*.
*Kidding. Like many birds, these #corvids are likely sitting open-mouthed to cool off in today's very hot weather. Breathing through their open bills causes the moisture in their mouths (and lungs!) to evaporate quickly as the outside air rushes in. So cool.

Always with the musings!
Today I much enjoyed watching the birds helping themselves to all the dog fur that I put out after clipping is done.
It goes in a disused nut feeder, the type with the wire mesh, not the plastic tube, and it is pushed down the central well until it is full.
And the birds, sparrows, and blue tits, fly back and forth, tugging out the pieces and taking it off to use in their nests as a soft bed for their eggs and hatchlings.
Yesterday's check on "our" raven's nest found Huginn and Muninn peering into it and making little nibbles at their materials. I'm not great at distinguishing male and female #ravens, but I think, due to his size and scruffier neck, that the male is on the right in this photo.
The nest is built under an overpass of Highway 97, over a stretch of gravel trail connecting two wetland areas. It makes sense to have found these two under a noisy #Bifrost connecting worlds.
