i'll be combining the hardware from a #supermicro #vmware host and a #netapp disk shelf into this one chassis.

pretty excited for the build :)

Hello, here is my #introduction post. I’m not new to social, but I am new to Mastodon.

I’m a #Communications pro who has worked in the #Technology industry for ~20 years. Currently works for #HPE, and formerly #NetApp, #Cisco and #Intuit.

I have lived in the #SanFranciscoBayArea, #Michigan and am now loving #MiddleTennessee near #Nashville.

Interests include #reading, #wine, #bourbon, #F1 🏎, #gardening, #cooking and my furbabies #cats.

The dream I have is to set up a #coop #isp that is centered around #learning somewhere #rural. Partly because I want to play with #vmware and #netapp and those kinds of toys are too expensive and useful to others to keep to myself.

Mostly because I want to help enable others to learn whatever they have interest in learning.

I imagine a farm house somewhere with pole barns with metalworking, woodworking, 3d printing, accessible to all, in addition to the datacenter and ISP operations.

Continuing my #TrueNAS thread. I bought the wrong SAS cables (I bought SFF-8643 to SATA, but I have SAS drives. So I needed SFF-8643 to 4 SFF-8482 cables). The cables arrived last night. The box had sat idle for about 6 days.

Powered it up last night, and my 4TB drives show 0KB available. (raw) Interestingly enough, doing the following as root got an error:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdf bs=1048576 count=1
dd: error writing '/dev/sdf': No space left on device
```

Turns out these drives were from #NETAPP and they use a very strange low-level format (520B per block, not 512!). And apparently that's so broken that consumer-grade stuff and non-netapp stuff can't cope. So I had to follow this [blog post here](https://forums.servethehome.com/index.php?threads/how-to-reformat-hdd-ssd-to-512b-sector-size.4968/).

That means I basically had to tell them 'Disk: format thyself' and it did some low-level formatting stuff back to a 512B block size, and now TrueNAS sees them fine.
