After the third time my #PFSense firwall decided to shut down it's LAN interface (or otherwis error it down) I was kind o hoping that either #Netgate or #PFsense had a presence here so the issue might be diagnosed.

It's possible that I could just bounce the network interface, and there might be a way for me to pull the log of what happened.

If you don't believe me that Netgate is trying to kill off the Community Edition of pfSense, here's your reminder that the Community Edition hasn't had an update in over 1 year. Stop supporting Netgate (don't install any new pfSense firewalls, do not buy their hardware despite what your favorite YouTuber tech influencer tells you). Switch to OPNSense which IS open source and IS getting updated. https://www.opnsense.org

@sirsquishy Personally I use #Ubiquiti #UniFi for WiFi & Switching (and even authentification via RADIUS) and #Netgate #pfSense or #Decisio #OPNsense (rarely #LightningWireLabs #ipFire) for Routing, Firewalling, VPN and the associated essentials like DHCP, DNS, NTP, etc.

It works fine and really kicks ass in terms of cost, flexibility, useability and scalability:
From a tiny single-room office up to a giant warehouse, stadium or campus of cubicle-laden offices...

Mostly it comes down to support options and what kind of SLA is needed:

Cuz that'll ultimately also decide between DIY and prebuilt-appliance...

And oftentimes stuff is better tested or integrates seemlingly with less seams of pfSense.

Looking for #DNS support on setting up a small, private Mastodon instance. I want to stay “on brand” with a domain that I have hosted at and with #namecheap but I want the instance running on a box in my house. Basically, CNAME the instance’s subdomain record to a FQDN at #cloudflare which is handling Dynamic DNS for me. Do I have this right? I’ve not set up such a thing in a few years. My worry is then passing this through my #Netgate firewall and not confusing the heck out of #LetsEncrypt!

@dch One of the future projects will be a #pfsense low power box. Either a #netgate or maybe a #pcengines. I have read some blog posts of combing Ethernet and wireless cards in the same box. It looked neat. Currently in my case investing in knowledge is more important than spending in equipment.
