I used to have a saying in my help desk days: "Do it, note it!"

On the help desk, it means that if you do something, anything, put it in a note... updated httpd.conf, applied a PHP module update, etc. and I like to use it even in my professional, non-help desk life now.

If you do something cool like install Mastodon, patch a bug in an open source project, create your own software, update your home lab etc., you should blog about it and share your notes!

Sometime this week πŸ“† (what's left of it) I will be trying out to see if I can recover my Mastodon :mastodon: instance from a failed :linux: server. Changing hosts :oracle: completely. Why you ask? Just to see if I can do it in a timely manner.

Dear tech vendors, if I call you wanting info on a firewall, don't spend 50 min on your other services before spending 5 min on the actual device I want. Its disrespectful of my time and makes me less likely to use your crap.

Any minded Mastodon users know Snort?

Stuck on a problem for school: I have a virtual environment with three networked computers. My rules capture everything right on the host machine, but nothing on the other two. I've set eth0 to promiscuous, but am stuck after that.

Any help would be appreciated.

Running a network cable today. We had the local telco build out diverse fiber paths to our transmitter sites, so I’m in the process of lighting those additional links up. Thankfully, it’s just a matter of making sure RSTP is properly configured.

Also, all the RF in this environment means U/FTP cable is a must.

To the amusement of my friends and colleagues, I'm really serious about new year resolutions, which I didn't make this year. Typically this is a new set of skills to learn or fitness goals. I've been telling myself I need to get better at networking and network security for YEARS. I think this might be the time. This fits well into my current project of beefing up my home network.

Anyone have any good resources for learning?

Haha. The -c -C and -G options are very useful.

A person left the company and tcpdump ran daily from crontab for several years before one day there was enough traffic that -c count_packets was exceeded before -G rotate_seconds

FWIW, I leave tcpdump running a lot.
