Das Buch Network Culture von Tiziana Terranova ist #kritischeTheorie des Internets um 2000, zu einem Zeitpunkt also, als die erste Phase des Internets - ein noch wenig ökonomisierter Raum - zu Ende ging, und Unternehmen wie Google Wege entwarfen um vernetztes Wissen, vernetzte Waren und vernetzte Menschen unter ihre Kontrolle zu bringen und mit ihnen Profit zu machen. Sie tun dies, wie später #ShoshanaZuboff und andere weiter untersuchten, vor allem durch Kontrolle und Steuerung: Monopolisierung von Quellen, Abhängigkeit von geschlossenen Feeds (Silos), Reaktionsmonitoring, Profilbildung, Personalisierung, Targeting, Manipulation. Die Vielfalt vernetzter Kommunikation wird damit datenpolitisch in eine bestimmte Richtung gesteuert: die Kontrolle über Menschen am Netz. Dem gegenüber, und das ist wieder Terranova, stehen kollaborative und demokratische Aspekte einer offenen und unkommerziellen Netzwerkkultur - sie ist also umkämpft.
