↪️ [Erratum] I managed to include a wrong link. 🤦 Here's the correct one:

📄 What is the brain?
🔗 doi.org/10.1016/s0166-2236(00) (paywalled)

In any case, it was a foreshadowing of sorts: the next stop in my reading itinerary turned out to be the paper whose link gatecrashed my previous toot. Another paper by Larry W. Swanson!

📄 Quest for the basic plan of nervous system circuitry.
🔗 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/ (free PMC article)

”As Cajal wrote in 1909, ‘To extend our understanding of neural function to the most complex human physiological and psychological activities, it is essential that we first generate a clear and accurate view of the structure of the relevant centers, and of the human brain itself, so that the basic plan—the overview—can be grasped in the blink of an eye.’”

Finally dipping my reading toes into the suggested readings provided in Larry W. Swanson’s Brain Architecture. Tiptoelingly, I started off with a paper by the author himself—“[a] short history of how the major parts of the brain have been named and classified.”

📄 What is the brain?
🔗 doi.org/10.1016/j.brainresrev.

Closing sentence of the paper: “The profound question really is not ‘what is the brain?’ but rather ‘what are the basic parts of the nervous system and how are they
interconnected functionally?’”

He made made extensive, detailed & beautiful illustrations of neural material for many species & regions of the brain& many discoveries in .

In 1922 he founded the Laboratorio de Investigaciones Biológicas, which has since become Instituto Cajal, or the Cajal Institute, in his honour. He worked until his death at age 82, in Madrid.

We still use Roman numerals to number the . But I’ve noticed lots of undergrad students that are completely unfamiliar with this outdated system. Arguments for/against switching to the more familiar Arabic numeral system in this particular instance?

heard a great talk👩‍🏫 by Belinda Petzler from uni Salzburg on effects of hormonal 💊 on & etc. - 1st time in 5 years of doing to hear this in such detail. Feels like an overlooked topic!

she also said that the variance due to hormonal cycles in / psych is < individual diff. -> worry less about it in designing studies💡

@ekmiller @bwyble @kendmiller @strangetruther @achristensen56 @NicoleCRust @DrYohanJohn @cogneurophys Ooh - interesting paper alert! of course
1. variable is not the same thing as indecipherable or random, so, the case where LFP is stable may be a more easily-interpretable exception to a more diverse set of drift 'rules',

2. lumpers and splitters can both be happy
--from still-relevant anatomical work of Guy Elston showing early sensory nctx organization gets incrementally "richer" with increasing dist. from sensory thal, (aka 'association' ctx incl dlPFC) and is proportionately amplified across primate species' with increasing brain size

--to Hilgetag Goulas Barbas (and @DrYohanJohn !) changing motifs where morphological/cytoarchitectonics parallel macroscale connectomics. While these anatomical studies do not argue for a single canonical (straw man) column, they suggest specific dimensions of gradients that may influence how a chunk of tissue computes. And computes differently from a chunk at another spot along those dimensions.

Thanks for doing this! I love this series almost as much as the sight of you following white tie dress code (!!)

At the risk of seeming sycophantic, as a grad student I always appreciated your encyclopedic knowledge esp. "there's nothing new under the sun" earlier work that warrants more recognition, or historical details, a la onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10

So I'd love to hear underappreciated or unsung heroes, esp. to counteract the Matthew effect.

New for neuromatch.social 🙂

My group investigates and defines cell types and neural circuits of the , , and that contribute to spatial processes.
These processes break down in 's disease. To understand the causes/triggers of , we study early-stage in the human and in mouse models.

I previously defined various types of retinal ganglion cells using ex vivo recordings during my PhD in , before moving to to work on of the , followed by the . My favourite technique is in vivo recordings and labelling as it enables identification of single based on their firing patterns, terminal distribution, and profile.

As an , my expertise is primarily in vivo and . I am also interested in , the origins of , and regulation of activity and by .

In a recent paper, Kuuspalu et al., showed that oral intramuscular nerve cords have a super interesting and unexpected geometry. As in the figure, they extend proximally bypassing two adjacent arms (1).

As far as the functional, computational or behavioral advantage of such a morphology, the authors do not speculate too much. Can’t wait to see more about it!!

Yet, although flexible and with a potentially unlimited number of degrees of freedom, tentacles control shows that the octopus “employs a vertebrate-like strategy, temporarily reconfiguring its arm into a stiffened, articulated, quasi-jointed structure” (1).

New review on “The evidence against somatotopic organization of function in the primate corticospinal tract”

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/365751

In contrast to established ideas (Foerster, 1936; Bell, 1970), they show extensive intermingling of corticospinal outputs from different cortical regions

Text book explanations of the motor sequelae of incomplete spinal injury, are still based on a supposed corticospinal somatotopy
