Doing errands sucks enough as it is for someone with without something like this happening...

We need better words for talking about in ways that aren't pathological, clinical, or derisive. I don't think it's useful to try to think up neologisms on the spot, but I keep my eyes open for new terminology that might arise organically in conversation. Any new words folks are using that are worth sharing?

The word "neurodiversity" itself is kind of new, and it's already been through a bit of an evolution and maybe even has tainted origins, but it's a good word and there's a reason so many of us use it. But even so, I wish it didn't sound so medical. (The evolution I mention is that "neurodiverse" used to mean "not neurotypical", but now generally is used to mean all neurotypes including neurotypical. We use "neurodivergent" for "not neurotypical" now. Likewise "neurotypical" used to mean not autistic, but we say "allistic" for that now.)

A few hashtags that could use an upgrade:

For all of us ADHDers who feel like failures because we fail at something everyone else says is easy - creating habits.

Loki: meow?

Me: Setting up a Mastodon account.

Hazel: meow

Me: I do have another one, @dpnash@mastodon.online, but I post a lot about topics, so I'm planning to do more of that here. For one thing, the character limit in posts is larger here, so not only is it a bit easier to post longer-form items, you fuzzballs get to have longer conversations with me.

Loki: *MEOW*.

Me: Oh, right.

- Things I am: , +, in a family of 3 older adults and 4 equally awesome (now mostly grown!) children.

- How I pay the bills: now, and before that, even longer ago.

- Other things I like: , obviously. Also ( in particular), , , , , , , , , .

- Some weirder, more specific ones? Fine. . Indoor . , currently learning and . I geek out a lot about astronomical data and I maintain a widely-used database of stars (the HYG catalog, and its new extension, the AT-HYG catalog with Gaia data) at github.com/astronexus.

Yes, I'm a geek. But you still put up with me, right?

Loki: meow
Hazel: meow

Me: Love you both too.

Hey neurotypicals, just so you know...

... when you say things like 'everyone is a bit autistic/ ADHD' - especially to children and teenagers - you're adding another log to a bonfire of negative self-image and low self-esteem. Making an already challenging life unnecessarily harder for those of us who actually are autistic/ ADHD.

Please, don't do that.

When you find the right book, it can be a revelatory experience for the reader. This is why it was so difficult for me when I went through a long period of being unable to focus on reading.

I felt lost without my books.

@Elizabeth3 Absolutely – there’s some very good participatory and neurodiversity-informed research being done at the moment

For example, I need look no further than @SueReviews’s research group a stone’s throw from me (if you’re *very* good at throwing stones – not that I condone stone-throwing in general!):

Autistic people often don't have great experiences with doctors. I suspect that in part it's because of doctors failing to humanise their patients.

Psychiatry in the west has been built upon a long history of colonial aggression. If you are part of a minority group, chances are you will end up in a psychiatrists office at some point in your life.

Psychiatry then positions the problem in your brain, rather than the political and material circumstances of your life.

Psychiatry needs to do better.

I've had this happen for things that I normally wouldn't even find difficult - at times I'm completely unable to identify what triggered it for a specific task.
