~30min video overview of current understanding of how memory is encoded in the brain at the hardware level.

CW: This research relies heavily on animal testing, it's referenced quite a bit in dry terms.

We may be emotionally complex, unique and delightfully random beings, but these researchers, with the help of AI, think they can predict our next favorite song. If they're correct, what else could they predict?

Bravo to for interviewing ethicists. This approval from the FDA is so, so inappropriate. And people wonder why I have lost hope in humankind.

Question for the group: Can be hereditary? My daughter recently met her half-sister and they discovered they both cannot form mental images. I was shocked. Never realized my daughter lacked that ability, nor did she realize it was not normal (might explain why she had trouble in public school). I suspect itā€™s not coincidental. Iā€™m a scientist & mixed-media artist who has no aphantasia. Bio father is the link.

My goodness - I think I tick all of these boxes.

Although being highly sensitive & empathetic also has its downsides. It is emotionally exhausting being tuned into everything that is going on around you & constantly making an effort not to hurt the feelings of others. And even mild or innocuous criticism from others who lack your sensitivity can really hit you hard - you wonder why they would say hurtful things to you when you would never say such hurtful things to them.

However, as I told a neighbour I stopped to chat with while walking to the supermarket only yesterday, I would much rather be the soft-touch that I am than a hard-case. Sometimes it can feel a little embarrassing to be a man who cries so easily, but I've found that a good cry not just while watching something on TV, but after a stressful time or traumatic event is very cathartic.

Revisiting basic assumptions in neuropsychology:

New paper argues that ā€œmethodological rigor is of course important, but replication problems may stem, in part, from a more pernicious source: faulty assumptions (i.e., ontological commitments) that mis-specify the psychological phenomena of interest.ā€
