Neurotribes, by Steve Silverman. Amazing book, it gave context to so many things I have read about autism, misconceptions, contradictions etc. and how we are where we are. It's a hard read because it describes how autistic children were treated (and adults ignored) until not so long ago, but I would recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about autism. Currently listening to #Neurotribes. It is funny how Temple Grandin (one of the first publicly known autistic adults) describes the neurologist Oliver Sacks being "as eccentric as she is" and Oliver Sacks enjoying Temples hug machine with its deep pressure. From today's point of view it seems so obvious that Sacks was on the spectrum (he wrote a book about his obsession with the periodic table...).
But back in those days it was a daring thought that autistic people have a "soul" at all, that they could reach adulthood or even have a doctor's degree. At least some things have changed over the centuries.

Had a wonderful conversation today with my 5th grade teacher, Billi Gosh, the first person to encourage me to become a writer, 56 yrs ago at PS 26 in NYC. She was still sharp as a tack, and told me she was so proud of my book #NeuroTribes. #Teachers don't get nearly enough respect (or pay).

When I was writing #NeuroTribes, I attended a #neurodiversity conference at Syracuse U in 2011 where Judy introduced @aneeman, the young cofounder of the #Autistic Self-Advocacy Network - a small but crucial moment in her bridge-building in cross-#disability advocacy.

@Spicewalla Yep, they did, and they also came for disabled folks, which I wrote about in depth in my book #NeuroTribes.

I would #actuallyAutistic #ally like to thank the writer of #Neurotribes for introducing me to how English Nazis groom and consume their prey. I understand a lot more about that exact type of clumsy evilness now.

If you have read Neurotribes or bumped into anyone from this particular cult branding you know they don't know any of that. They think Hans Asperger was literally their "fairy god father".

Because the man who wrote #Neurotribes is the first English Nazi I have ever met.

The man who wrote #Neurotribes had an amazing opportunity to shed some justice and light on Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger.

Leo Kanner killed no one. and lost his job fleeing the Nazis after developing many theories on the origin of Autism and how to help us-- including teaching us sign language.

Hans Asperger was the Nazi who took his job. He killed at least 700 Autistic children because they were not "good" enough.

Asperger's means "might make a good Nazi". That is the original definition.
