We need better words for talking about #neurodiversity in ways that aren't pathological, clinical, or derisive. I don't think it's useful to try to think up neologisms on the spot, but I keep my eyes open for new terminology that might arise organically in conversation. Any new words folks are using that are worth sharing?
The word "neurodiversity" itself is kind of new, and it's already been through a bit of an evolution and maybe even has tainted origins, but it's a good word and there's a reason so many of us use it. But even so, I wish it didn't sound so medical. (The evolution I mention is that "neurodiverse" used to mean "not neurotypical", but now generally is used to mean all neurotypes including neurotypical. We use "neurodivergent" for "not neurotypical" now. Likewise "neurotypical" used to mean not autistic, but we say "allistic" for that now.)

How often are #neurotypical people as comfortable as they appear to be? I was diagnosed at 40. I spent my life thinking we all put on a face and are messed up inside. Sure life is hard for everyone. But everything about my diagnosis points to it being harder for me. While others lie saying they work more than they do, I have to hide how hard I work to keep up. What do you think?

many NT folk also mask. This was a big topic in the not-very-recent past. #Autism was still misunderstood and thus ignored in the masks discourse. It seems to have flipped lately, with NT masking being increasingly ignored.
a lot of folk, both NT and ND seem to keep their masks on, never taking them off even when alone.
Masking helps maintain lies, up to and including the Big Lie.
It is harmful to everyone.

@techsuppork it's all exhausting tbh.
The past few years I went from:
Undiagnosed.
Realizing I have a problem and seeking diagnosis.
Getting that diagnosis.
Trying to manage the medication's ability to exasperate my anxiety.
Trying to manage friends and family that don't understand the disorder and the changes in my mood and habits I was going through.
Accepting that I am not #neurotypical and these "friends" didn't want to even try to understand.
Cutting them out of my life and being personally lonely, while at the same time realizing I am not alone in my thoughts, habits and behavior and accepting that I'm different. I am different, but millions of others are different too and none of us have to feel alone in our "craziness" that is our brains.

I was this many years old before it sank in just now--literally just now--that
I AM NOT #NEUROTYPICAL.
#WhoKnew?
I'm #Neuroatypical!
And I should have had #Accommodations.
That Explains So Much.
I was mostly a good student (middle school not so much) but damn it was hard. And work! Don't even get me started.

This portion of a post on r/Blind is an excellent example of the difference between how “disabled” people actually function and how “normal” people perceive them. The rest of the post is here: https://web.archive.org/web/20230703134218/https://old.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/14nzwkm/they_finally_did_it_reddit_made_it_impossible_for/
To emphasize the point from my own perspective: #autistic people are only disabled as far as #neurotypical people consistently refuse to adapt to #neurodivergence. We are capable of living fully functional lives, and that’s all most of us are asking for.

When I first started getting involved in #activism, I found there were (relatively) a lot of #neurodiversity activists who were #liberals, and a lot of #leftists who were #neurotypical and didn't say or do much with neurodiversity. There were, as far as I could tell, very few people approaching neurodiversity from a leftist perspective. It was a major goal of mine to highlight the connections and bridge that gap. It still is.
That was around five years ago. Now, I'm thrilled to say I'm finding tons of #neurodivergent leftists around. Perhaps it's because I'm better at finding people, but I do have a sense that the landscape has changed at least somewhat in the past five years.
However, neurodiversity is still a "side issue" (if even) to the vast majority of neurotypical leftists. Our histories, #communities, and struggles are not understood by them, and that understanding is not prioritized. They don't read our #theory, or engage with our #movements. They know we're here, they have a vague idea of who we are, and they can work us into conversations that are really about something else. I don't want to take away from the importance of those things. But #neurodivergence isn't an aside!

I don't want to sound aloof, but the thinking styles of NTs are not without flaws. There is no obvious reason why they should be overrated.
Maybe they have just a better marketing strategy.🤔

@selfcare_cj1 some of us are in this space BECAUSE not everyone is wonderful and precious. History has told me that if I open myself up personally to anyone #neurotypical , then I'm too much to handle and am left alone, disappointed. So I am alone, still disappointed, but unwilling to trust anyone after countless backstabs, thievery and manipulation consuming my personal relationships. #ADHD #anxiety #depression #neurodivergent #neurodiversity #loneliness

@DouglasTroup_ Hey, I've been diagnosed about 8 years ago myself. I think figuring things out is going to be a lifelong process. But I think #neurotypical people struggle to some degree as well. It's just that much harder for us on the #spectrum. The #fediverse is generally a great place and far less abrasive because hatred is generally quickly gets shutdown and drowned out.

@beno I think there are people who enjoy the commute and time in the office and thrive off the social bullshit of it all. And I think those people are relatively high up in the organisation and just feel that their experience is the only/correct one.
I've never been as good a worker as I have been working from home. It's helped me realise that I am not #neurotypical and gives me the freedom to manage my day to work to the best of my ability
@mariyadelano @actuallyautistic I haven't written on it but I have casually observed that the #fediverse is an acceptable and safe place to discuss our #special #interests at length and detail and have people genuinely intrigued by what we have to offer. Some of us (like myself) are experts in the minute details of the way networks and communications operate.
It's been a place of education and teaching for me: A real respite from the skullduggery and exhaustion that being #neurodivergent in a #neurotypical work can really and truly be.
