Have you ever wondered how large a pair of merging neutron stars actually is? And what happens during such a cosmic collision? Our #MultimediaMonday has some answers for you:

Playing with the code of Denis Arruga, which computes the received flux from the X-ray hot-spots at the surface of a #NeutronStar in both general and entangled #relativity: here for a 1.4 solar mass neutron star. That's crazy to see how close they are, yet different! (Note that there is no free parameter at the theory level in order to get this plot!)
‘Perfect explosion’: merger of neutron stars creates spherical cosmic blast
The explosion, called a kilonova, created a rapidly expanding fireball of luminous matter before collapsing to form a black hole

An article published in the journal "Nature Astronomy" reports an explanation for the abrupt slowdown in the rotation of the magnetar cataloged as SGR 1935+2154 and its attribution to a sort of volcano that ejected a kind of wind into space. A team of researchers used X-ray data from ESA's XMM-Newton space telescope and NASA's NICER instrument to analyze changes in the magnetar.

An article published in the journal "Nature Astronomy" reports the detection of gamma-ray eclipses in binary systems formed by a normal star or a brown dwarf that have a pulsar as a companion that is defined as a spider pulsar because they steal gas from the companion behaving like a black widow.

Last week was a great week for team work.
As PI, I had applied for a group grant in early 2022. Although it's not a huge amount, I am glad we got the money that we can now use for activities that benefit/interest the entire #neutronstar group at my institute.
On top of that, I had one of those moments where I realise (not the first time but I often forget) that my favourite part of being a scientist is working with others, helping them learn and succeed on their own paths. It's so rewarding.
